I will never understand what the in-uiverse explanation is for not starting those battles at full power. Everybody KNOWS that their opponent is holding back. The chikara no taikai is something serious. You lose, you cease to exist. The end. So why ever fight without full power? Show each other whatīs necessary.

Which is fine. Except that, the more transformations he collects as the series progresses, the longer it takes for him to slowly work his way through all of them in every fight.
I get that it's an artificial plot device to slowly develop tension, but eventually it ends up doing the exact opposite.
That's why SSJ God was good at first, because it felt like he could just use that as a new starting point. But that's not how the series uses it.
Is there any reason Goku doesn't use SS red and just goes straight to blue?
Itīs especially bad because ... imagine youīre Gohan. You tell your dad "please fight me seriously!" and then ... you see him go super saiyajin and *know* that heīs not fighting you seriously, because heīs got like 4 transformations left :|

Just reminding you guys the entire point of Gohan being in the tournament is not due to his power/strength, it is for his brains and to be able to devise plans. He's the strategist. That's his true power.

The manga version uses it a lot more.
