No other details were revealed, but the news comes as a surprise as the director for the Naruto Shippuden anime, Hayato Date, had mentioned there would be no more fillers in 2014 after the conclusion of the Kakashi ANBU arc. That makes us at Saiyan Island wonder if this special will be in addition to a normal canon episode or if it will be in lieu of it.
Technically, one could argue that Mecha Naruto is canon since he is designed by Masashi Kishimoto (his sketch below), the creator the the Naruto manga. At the same time, however, Mecha Naruto never actually was in the manga so one could also argue against it being canon as well. Whatever the case, we are getting a special featuring Mecha Naruto in the Naruto Shippuden anime. It’ll be exciting to see how it ties in with the launch of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution (which will also be released September 11 in Japan).
