The whole interaction with Sanji's group and the yeti cool brothers was pretty pointless, really.

Luffy doesn't like sneaking around!
Smiley looks like a troublesome enemy. Ace could have made short work of it, but I wonder how these folks are going to deal with it. It seems to me like the traditional slime monsters of fantasy, so cutting it might only increase the number of enemies. Enemies that emit lethal poison gas.

I'm not sure Ace would have even been able to do much, since it seems to be flowing over the burning half of the island without injury.
Depending on how intellegent it is, Luffy might just be able to Conquerer's Haki on it.
