Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?

Problem children are coming from another world, aren`t they?

"Sakamaki Izayoi, a boy bored with the entire world, one day receives a letter, with the following wording:

"This letter is for those of you with many troubles and extraordinary powers. If you wish to see how far that power of yours will take you, cast aside your family, your friends, your possessions, and come to our Little Garden."

The moment Izayoi opens the envelope, he is transported to an alternate world. There, he discovers that two other problem children were transported by letters as well — a taciturn girl named Kasukabe You with a cat, and a beautiful yet haughty girl named Kudou Asuka. A girl named Kuro Usagi (Black Rabbit) summoned the three to her presently unnamed (No Name) community, giving them a chance to participate in the Gift Games... well, and to use their gifts to help her weak community regain reputation, name and banner from the Demon Lord, who took those away in a Gift Game." -AniDB

I'm sure I didn't even have a look at this during the season preview (and neither did anybody else, I bet). I watched the first ep back when I happened to have a moment with nothing else to watch and the ridiculous name (another victim of the random name generator, as Sankaku puts it) caught my attention. To be honest the description doesn't really do much honour to this show; when you think of a problem child, after all, you probably think of somebody who annoys the hell out of you. So, that ought to be the first thing I correct here: The main characters aren't actually so much problem children as they are badasses unsatisfied with their previous life. Especially the dude. He's, so far, one of the best main characters for a while: A smart, cunning, and powerful jerk looking for amusing challenges, and he's not above manipulating others to find that pastime. To be fair, I don't really expect the show to make him a heartless bastard, so probably he will gain some shounen flaws... umm... characteristics, but I hope he won't change too much.

In case I left something ambiguous, at the moment I'd sooner drop any other show but Chihayafuru or Minami-ke to keep watching this. In fact I watched the first three eps for a second time because they were so amusing. I especially enjoy Kuro Usagi's (the bunny girl in the pic) reactions to the stunts by the summoned trio. It's so amusing to watch her alternate between dispirited and thrilled.

The main character dude, Izayoi, is voiced by Asanuma Shintarou (Tsuda of Seitokai Yakuindomo, Zeo of One Piece, Takeru of Minami-ke) and he's acing the role. Kuro usagi is excellently acted by Nomizu Iori (Haruna of Kore wa Zombie, Nymph of Sora no Otoshimono), Asuka (the non-bunny girl in the pic) is actually voiced by a half-Australian Bridcut Sarah Emi (hardly any other roles to mention), and You is voiced by Nakajima Megumi (Ranka Lee of Macross Frontier).

This series is surprisingly good. Same reason as Kraco, I watched it because I was bored waiting for other series. Very pleasantly surprised.

Kuro Usagi's characterization so far has been absolutely perfect thanks to her VA, and I have to admit, I am amused at her random English words, particularly her use of "Yes!" spoken in a perky tone. The mixed language characters usually annoy the shit out of me. There is also a fair amount of mystery about her true abilities that keeps you interested. She's been highly coveted by other inhabitants, for simple reasons (her body in one case) or less obvious ones.

The attitudes three Earth characters are indeed a nice change of pace. They give off an undeniable lack of concern in the case of Kasukabe, and utter confidence from Asuka and Izayoi. You got an immediate sense that this kind of world is the only place the three of them could truly belong. They were being wasted in their original worlds (multiverse theory!).

The action is a series of con games, bluffs, misdirection, and outright fights. All of that is encased within a framework that demands you outsmart your opponent right from the very start by misleading them with contracted rules, and it's not just the contract writer that gets to participate there. So far those have been well written. Kuro Usagi was dumb, underestimated her new arrivals, and wasn't specific enough. Later on, the two girls forgot to specify terms beforehand, and were at a disadvantage. Being underestimated is a sound strategy, as is diverting attention from the stronger participants and their special abilities.

The ED is pretty adorable too in super deformed animation, with Kuro Usagi's desperate 90s-Japanese-disco feathered-fan performance being the highlight (also seen in the Fatal Fury movie by Mai).

Yeah I started watching this too for lack of anything else, and so far it's better than expected. I don't know how much depth there is, but I can at least be sure that this could be entertaining.

And it seems the anime quadrupled the LN sales so a second season might be a possibility.

    This was a VN?

I wonder if it is a single or multiple ending VN.

Has it ever been mentioned why Izayoi is wearing those headphones all the time? I might have been drunk and forgot when such a detail was mentioned.

Otherwise, that is the only thing that is keeping me from really liking this show.

    LN, sorry.

You're just jealous because you couldn't pull those off.

Maybe it's some Japanese thing? Wearing headphones over there is perhaps a much worse offense to the public decency than in the West (although it's not like it wouldn't be frowned upon anywhere if it makes you look like you pay no attention to anything, least of all people trying to talk to you)? There have been other "independent badass" category characters that have been doing it, like Laxus of Fairy Tail.

It doesn't bother me at all, in this case.

I just see it as posturing, or at the very least an attempt at looking cool (but failing), and that is something the character does not need at all because he is evidently bad ass.

Unless of course, he is actually listening to something using the headphones.

I never thought anybody would try to look cool by wearing headphones... I assumed they were worn to: Listen to music (or something else, like a language teaching record, haha), look rebellious (what I was referring to in the earlier post), look like you belong to some whatever hip hop gang, or finally as a psychological wall for ostracized people who want to make it look like they don't listen to people instead of nobody even trying to talk to them.

The 2nd and 3rd possibilities you mentioned are basically juvenile attempts at looking cool.

It really helps this show that some fundamental things in it are bound to the rules of the gift games. So, the main characters can't just simply push forward like in usual action shounen, but they actually often need to think it through. Especially Izayoi whose level of power, and especially its limits, are still a big mystery. Though the dude actually wants to follow the rules; not because he'd be any boy scout, but because it can bring more fun, especially if you can fool the opponent by finding a loophole in their own rules.

It also really helps this show that they keep teasing Kuro Usagi. She's like created to be tricked and teased. Asuka and You have showed unfortunate signs of becoming too serious and boring, but at least Izayoi still is out to enjoy his time.

I'm still liking Asuka's authority ability. They've shown that while she can humiliate a number of people pretty easily, her ability doesn't quite work against the stronger-willed opponents that are equivalent to her. She certainly has some room to grow, while still projecting her haughty air hither and thither.

Kasukabe will eventually dominate/befriend all animal life around her, exploiting their own abilities as her own. I'm not really worried there. The reason she was so grievously injured was because neither of the two girls were allowed to directly use their abilities.

But you're right, teasing and mildly abusing Kuro Usagi is a key component to enjoying this series. At least we got a little hint of why so many covet her. Indeed, a lot of it is about her luscious thighs...but she isn't a slouch when it comes to powerful combat either. She's just restricted in some way. I am surprised that Izayoi didn't press on the conditions and issues that Kuro Usagi must fulfill be fore she is allowed to participate in Gift Games as well.

As good as it feels to watch Izayoi humiliate arrogant scumbag enemies and amaze his allies, not to mention tease Kuro Usagi, it's still starting to concern me how unstoppable he is. It'd be exceedingly difficult to write a consistently interesting story if the main character never faces any hardship. It's true he did seem like he chose not to try to fight Shiroyasha, but during this fight against another demon lord, he never even needed to worry for a second. Well, it's still far too early to judge the rest of the show and it's true I enjoyed this episode, so perhaps I'm being overly pessimistic. Especially considering being so powerful is only a part of his charm.

I have faith in the setup of the Gift Games that his future opponents will work around him and that will depower him a little bit. Until now, he has been a relative unknown, even deliberately hiding his achievements behind the little guy. But if Shiroyasha was watching it, others were too. The more well-known he gets, the more custom tailored the rules might be.

Asuka and Kasukabe were already banned from using their gifts directly once, Izayoi will undoubtedly get the same treatment, and then display some other amazing facet of his abilities and aptitudes.

He has shown he has far more wits than some demon lords, so it would be interesting to see him in a game that doesn't either allow or require him to use sheer power. Even more so because he has already demonstrated he's not a musclehead by not meddling with other people's fights and by holding back in certain situations for the sake of greater strategy.

Izayoi managed to become even more wicked (in a good way) in my eyes by using the kid leader as a shield against Asuka's kick. At the same time, though, he's not anymore nearly as detached or nonapproachable as he seemed to be in the beginning (or dangerous). He's still wandering around and doing stuff on his own, behind the others' backs, which I hope will continue forever, but in the end he's also out there to have fun, so it's natural he socializes with the rest. It's perfectly ok as long as he still uses them and manipulates them like always. And teases Kuro Usagi.

Kuro Usagi got quite a chance to show her qualities finally. I doubt Izayoi really went all out, but neither did she, for that matter.

I'm glad they deal with Shiroyasha so frequently. She very much shares the wavelength with Izayoi (to Kuro Usagi's demise).

Kuro Usagi is no less of a god than the other three, she is just stuck not being able to participate, for some reason, one that I am increasingly curious about. She had help when catching Asuka, but her speed is truly amazing. She was able to catch up to them in no time, and grab You before she could react. She might have gotten both if Izayoi hadn't picked Asuka up. With her staff, Kuro Usagi's destructive power isn't far below Izayoi's either.

Asuka became an even more fascinating character than I could have imagined she would be. We learned she is from the immediate post-war era, where she starts to hear about non-Japanese culture and become interested in it, but hasn't really experienced any of it. It makes her a little bit more flighty than I initially thought she was, but that is a positive thing. I was happy to see that Izayoi was more than willing to indulge her on experiencing her first Halloween.

Overall, I'm liking the pace of character development for the main cast. We learn a little bit more about them each episode, and it usually leaves me wanting more. They start out appearing as very simple characters, but they have a lot more to them than one expects.

It really is too bad that this show is only going to be 10 episodes long.

The novel sales went up a ridiculous amount since the anime came out though, so i'm hoping for a second season.
