He was a bloody pulp, and Jojo already approached him once and even used a ripple attack against him, something the enemy confirmed to be dangerous without his nonsensical scarf.

First time he had a Tommy, second time he had the element of surprise after using the mirror and the third time he deflected his lazors with his shot glass ripple. He never jumped Straights without a plan, shit's all calculated.
Joseph isn't Jonathan, he fights with his head along with his instinct.
Based on your description, which I believe is quite accurate, he relies almost solely on his head.
His instincts should have told him that the bloody pulp version of the vamp was the optimum time to kill it. But you are right that this is more consistent with Jojo 2's character.

The animation looked a bit derpy at times, would be nice if they fixed it in the Blurays. Still fine though, the frames that mattered looked great.

Such a great episode. I know this will be coming off wrong, but: Sooo refreshing to see a show/anime that doesn´t take Nazis as complete idiots or clowns. Stroheim was fantastic.
Anyways, wondering what the plot will develop into. Merely defeating pillar man after pillar man would be boring. Also ... why find other weaknesses? The sun is a pretty big one, lol.

I physically clapped (once) when Jojo revealed his pigeon-trick. No idea when/how he could have done that, but that goes for the dozen grenades on Straits as well. Badassery is not affected.
