Their VR interface isn't like our Oculus where it's just a camera stuck to your face. Theirs integrates all of your senses to the point where you can have sex. VR in their world isn't just another screen or console. It's a different level of experience all together.

With that in mind, I don't think electricity is much of a hyperbole.

I do, because without VR, their world is just lacking one more form of media.

Without electricity, our entire society and way of life can't exist.

That's the thing. VR is another society and way of life. It cannot be classified as mere media or form of entertainment when it is almost indistinguishable from reality. Games are just the first step. Sci-fi fiction has documented the possibilities quite well, I think.

That's ALSO completely dependent on electricity.

That alone should throw the electricity:no electricity::VR:No VR comparisons into perspective. Where the one comparison is completely contained INSIDE the other, along with the entirely of the rest of modern society.

Rather than looking at it based on dependency, the change in people's lives brought about by the technology is comparable. Yes, without electricity, people return to manual labor for everything, something humans did just fine two hundred years ago. But with VR, it is possible for people to stop existing in reality completely (i.e. Matrix). It is this unique and drastic potential for change that I think Buff was referring to when he made the comparison.

*sigh* fine. This is a dumb thing to be arguing about anyway.

Really? I actually think it's far more compelling than most of the discussions in this thread. The comparison between pre-electricity with electricity gap vs. pre-VR with no VR gap is more interesting than most of the recent posts.

Of course, the assumption is with electricity state has no VR in order to eliminate the dependency.

Well, this is months old news, but just saw that there's a movie for SAO coming up, to be released in 2017 apparently.

Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale

In 2026, two years since the SAO incident, a new game called "Oridinal Scale," an Augmented-Reality MMO, is becoming popular among the players. But…strange things are happening in the game and Kirito and the gang are facing a new danger. A brand new story created by the original author, Reki Kawahara and directed by Tomohiko Ito, "Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale-" is coming to theaters in Spring 2017.

    The film's returning cast includes:

    Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito
    Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna
    Rina Hidaka as Silica
    Ayahi Takagaki as Lisbeth
    Miyuki Sawashiro as Sinon
    Hiroaki Hirata as Klein

The film's all-new original story will take place after the Mother's Rosario arc, which was the final arc depicted in the TV anime's second season. Original light novel author Reki Kawahara is writing a new story for the film. Tomohiko Ito is returning from the two TV anime series and the anime special to direct the film at A-1 Pictures. Shingo Adachi is also returning from the TV anime to design the characters based on abec's original character designs, and to draw the key visual above. Yuki Kajiura is returning to score the music.

Key points, that it's an original story and it's written by the original author, which at least is promising. The other key point is that it takes place after the Mother's Rosario arc.

The most important point is that I didn't know what the fuck the Mother's Rosario arc was. As I was researching it, it was apparent to me that I never watched this arc, and that apparently I didn't finish Sword Art Online at all when I thought I had. I had stopped after the whole Excalibur business.

Well for good or bad, I have this second season to finish and an upcoming movie to look forward to.

And here's the trailer for the movie:

lol now i am not sure myself if i saw the Mothers Rosario arc or not....

regarding the movie/trailer, ugh did they went for the augmented reality instead of the VR?

i remember kirito researching ways to implement AR with the VR characters (for their "child") but going full blown after only 2 years? i hope i am wrong

The Mother's Rosario was like some Kirito-NTR-but-not arc. It confused the hell out of me.

And now, finally, I can say I finished watching SAO season 2... Not sure how I feel about this last arc. It felt like a sappy, 7 episode drag that came off as just a long and slow epilogue to the series. Didn't enjoy it, it was underwhelming, but yet the emotions and the Asuna journey wasn't half-bad to go through I thought.

The death scene was well done I thought. Also, I thought when Kirito stood between the Sleepy Knights and the antagonists trying to steal the boss from the group was quite badass to see, at least the entrance he did in that scene. Other than that the rest felt quite dull.

As for the movie, seems like something I'll enjoy watching if I don't over-think it.

And now we're getting a Live-Action American TV Series....

Will probably end up being shit.

Can't get myself excited for this.

Oh god, I can already imagine the low quality PlayStation 2-era monster graphics :/

"She's the only non-loli girl in the show, your honor!" will be my defense in court

At least Skydance has been fairly successful with their projects, so at least that gives me some semblance of hope.

Ordinal Scale had seriously amazing animation, but sadly that's about it.

The plot itself could've been a somewhat sad story but they really didn't manage to build up on that. The most annoying thing in this movie however is that Kiritio is Kirito and the plot armor is super obvious and at some points it felt like they didn't know how he could possibly beat his enemies and said "fuck it, lets just make him kick ass or let's teleport 50 of his friends right next to him so they can help"

But it's cool if you like Asuna - she was shown in so many different outfits!
