You've got to be fucking kidding me.

Oh he is always serious, as am I. We're more contrarian than anything else though. I agree with DS. I really don't care to conform to society's or anyone else's views. I just don't think people can have a healthy functioning relationship when there is such a large age disparity. In particular I don't know why a guy would be attracted to a younger woman. I'm not opposed to the idea it has just never happened with me but that is entirely different from whether such people should be together or not. If it works for you, it works for you

But we know from how you act out online that your life in real isn't anywhere near as cool as you pretend. That makes me feel old.
You are completely correct, I mean my mom doesn't exist either right? I just made her up just now so I could feel like a total badass on the internet.
Look at this guy with the badass mom and friends is what I was going for.
Too bad that in the real world she would totally make snide remarks at a younger girlfriend and actually already has cast me out because she's religious and I'm not.

Just like how in the real world smoking pot because you want to understand criminals is the best possible course of action; ofcourse in the real world you also obviously lie about it, because law enforcement so desperately need more liars on the force.
    Oh wait...

That is you, except your perpetual "high" isn't caused by being drugged or your notouriously clever usage of weed, but by your sheer insanity.

Your mom doesn't exist as you make her out to be. What you think as "she doesn't care that you have a younger gf" is actually more like "she doesn't care what I do because she's a shitty mom."

The pot thing was experimental, nothing to do with the "best possible" thing to do. Your other comments fall in line with the silly belief that police are perfect model human beings who don't lie, don't drink or do drugs, and don't make mistakes. They must operate in the same world you live in where others' opinions about you don't matter and you only hang out/associate with quality people.

That kid is awesome. His shitty parent putting the video on yt... not so much. They even tried a second video with the kid high. Didn't do so well.

For God will not permit that we shall know what is to come... those who by some sorcery or by some dream might come to pierce the veil that lies so darkly over all that is before them may serve by just that vision to cause that God should wrench the world from its heading and set it upon another course altogether and then where stands the sorcerer? Where the dreamer and his dream?

As soon as she started not giving a damn her life became better, now she basically only cares about herself and her sons.
And as long as I'm not living some sort of criminal life, she's fine with it.
So basically, for your mom, her relationship with the family was otherwise kind of crappy, so for whatever reason the cost of distancing herself from them was readily paid. I get that. Imagine someone whose family was actually good to them though in almost all ways. The family relationship is close, they enjoy each others company. Imagine the kind of family where a man and his wife both work but have a baby/young child and can easily bring that child over to the parents home for babysitting twice a week. In this family, love is reciprocated, help is reciprocated, and things are generally good...but the family is racist. A member of that family would find it difficult to bring in a mate of another race, because for them, the cost of dealing with the family's resentment or disowning them would be high. Something similar would hold if this person knew the family would severely frown upon a much younger mate.

Again, I get that for some people the relationship with the family isn't that great, so the decision to not give a shit is easy. But the better the relationship with the family is, the harder it is to make that decision. As far as friends are concerned, lets say you made those friends when you were in college, and now you're 50. That I think would be about 30 years for most. Who you are at 50 and were at 20 is definitely a different person, and as you've changed, you've changed in such a way they found acceptable. If you've had them for 30 years, they should be good friends. Now you bring home a twinkie, knowing some of them will give you shit. It's easier not to care with friends than with family, but it'd still be a consideration for some.

"You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood."

    What?
My mom for instance went the extra mile for her relatives and they basically returned the favour with shit on a platter,
She decided her happiness was more important than those of people who were ultimately living their own lives.
This is exactly the same as your:
"I have to break up with my younger girlfriend or else my family will disown me."

My entire point has been that having society dictate that being attracted to someone younger than yourself is wrong and creepy is just fucking stupid.

There is actually a commercial here that shows a girl and a much older gentleman walking down the aisle, but when they reach the altar it turns out he is her dad and she is giving him away to his much younger boyfriend.
That describes an unacceptable social scenario right?

Seriously there is no reason to feel being attracted to a younger person is going to "land you in hot water"; get yours and do what makes you happiest. Really just a silly, socially driven reason to feel old.

I think rather than defending the idea, Barles was trying to explain the reality that for some people such choices will not really make them happier. Being swayed by society in this context is stupid, but that does not mean everyone can just willingly not care.

As far as feeling old, it's not just that there are all these young hot girls running around. It's knowing those years are beyond me, seeing them go through freshman orientation and their first years away from home and trying new things and having new experiences. I'd like to be a part of their learning process (if nothing else than what they should avoid, wink wink nudge nudge know what I mean) but I feel I'd just corrupt their experience since I've already been through it and that would be unfair.

Holy fuck; this must have been the most humblest and altruistic thing you've said so far.

    Yup, that's it.

My mindset is pretty much unchanged from the way it was back when I was that age, but my concerns are not the same. Not only do all these college kids look so young to me, but the things they worry about even further the divide for me, even if we enjoy many of the same things. Also, depending on the way I dress, they react differently to my presence. If I have on professional attire, I'll be mostly unnoticed, but if I put on a t-shirt, some jeans and boots, then the reaction is different. I'll recognize them as younger, but they don't seem to recognize me as older. That catches me off guard unless I've been around them for some time, like during the summer/fall when I tend to go to a lot of concerts.
