My particular issue with this being a happy ending at all is that my vision of how ghost stories should be is colored by the ghost stories I know. Basically, if there's a ghost, something is horribly wrong, and the ghost is suffering. I do like Shinta's version of an ending though because it does come across as a bit less of a cop-out...but still a cop out. But whatever, I'm not too hung up on it. I just found out that there's a manga that seems to go beyond the story presented in the anime, and I welcome a second season just for the characters. I'd just have to adjust my thinking a bit: a little less tragedy, a little more Casper the Friendly Ghost.
