Synopsis: No matter what age it is, the "Bullied Child" will never disappear. The overweight, Middle School student, Haruyuki, was one such kid. The only time he could relax completely, was when he would play a squash game on the local network the school had set up. He loved playing this simple game as he can forget painful times while immersed in it.

It was fall. He was passing his time like this until one day, he had an encounter with the school's most beautiful, refined girl, "Snow Black", which changed his life abruptly. Introduced to the software she transmitted, Haruyuki learned about "Accel World." A program that enhances one's mind capabilities, with certain side-effects.

It was the moment the guy on the lowest rung at school became "Burst Linker," protecting the Princess as her knight.

[UTW] - Episode 01

Heh, pretty awesome for a first episode.

The real world Haruyuki seems a bit off in terms of art style compared to everyone else. Almost like he's from a different series. The pig avatar is great though, reminds me of dragonball and Ranma. Though even better is the way Snow Black/Kuroyuki cuddles him.

Also interesting things going on with the childhood friend, but I can't quite figure out why Haruyuki is so determined not to let his other childhood friend find out that he's being bullied, abused, and beaten up. They're making it out to be the one thing he doesn't want to happen the most. I wonder how upset Chiyuri is going to get as Haruyuki and Kuroyuki get closer. She's already gotten a bit downtrodden about it.

It was pretty obvious with the end why Kuroyuki warned him not to connect to the global net. Saw that coming the moment she told him not to do it.

This is unmistakably one of the best of the news shows starting this season.

It's a little weird, a main character without a main character's design. He looks like that one childhood friend the MC first saves when awakening his powers. I think it'll just take some getting used to.

That scene is so awesome yet makes me so jealous at the same time.

Harayuki's trailing kuuh~ every time seals the effect.

I don't really like his "battle armour" design though. It's pretty shitty and looks like a default space suit.

Hmm, let's just hope we still get to see more of piggy-mode. It would suck if the episodes to come were all just real-world and Duel world. At least Kuroyuki keeps her butterfly avatar.

That's not really the case though. Kuroyuki implied that she is very ashamed of her robotic battle form, Black Lotus, even calling it an abomination. If she sealed it, that means she will be unsealing it at some point.

I like the dynamic between the two of them. Kuroyuki always being a bit flirty with him (which bothers her own classmates as well as Chiyuri). At this point I can't really say what she likes so much about him, since she seems to have been attracted to him since she met him at the squash courts. It's not clear what she wants him for (defeating her I wonder?), but it certainly did feel like she was confessing to him, and he refused in his very humble and polite way. He's got such low self-esteem, but the two girls must see something in him that we haven't been shown yet.

Maybe she loves to cuddle his pudginess, in little piggy form and made real life.

I do love that his ultimate attack is just a headbutt, and a really powerful one at that for how slow it is, and how simple the animation for it is. It one-shot KO'd the guy.

Eventually, yeah. Until then we get to see her in various pretty forms. Her attitude's changed a bit, so I'm curious to see this darker side to her. We've already seen that she's not above using deceptive methods to achieve her goals.

I'm thinking that might be the case as well after her speech about how being victorious isn't all there is to everything. I'm putting money on the black robot that harayuki kicks during the OP (@ "chang'n the world") to be her Duel Avatar.

The first pic in this thread suggests otherwise though, but perhaps Kuroyuki's avatar will change along with her heart as she gets to know Haryuki better. There's no better way for Harayuki to repay her for giving him a new life on the Burst scene by rescuing her from whatever shameful self she hides.

Seriously! And what's best is that he's actively trying to better himself out of gratitude to Black Lotus. You can't even begin to compare his attitude to early Yuki and Shu. Those fuckers were pathetic.

At least he's not average. I'm honestly tired of normal doesn't stand out characters who becomes the center of attention for some random obscure reason and never develop as a character.

Haruyuki didn't inherit some sort of special power, have some hidden potential or randomly finds a magical items that suddenly makes him special. He's just straight up good at video games from playing countless hours over the years and he himself said that it was the one thing he won't lose at.

Having a main character with an identifiable fault gives him plenty of room for development. He's overweight, really big on games and is bullied a lot. Those are legitimate reasons for low self-esteem and also makes sense as to why he is good at video games. So now that all the major event is taking place inside HIS zone of comfort, it's very possible for him to gain some confidence.

They've lined up the purpose and the final bosses very cleanly and plainly... not sure how i feel about that. More importantly though, i hope we don't get stuck in this behind the scenes bulshit for too long and have some battles sooner rather than later.

Not sure how cleanly and plainly this all is, but there were definitely hints. Whether things will play out like that I'm not too sure.

When Kuroyuki was telling him about that story, the scenario in my mind was that Harayuki would reach level 9 and the two of them would face off for one to reach level 10.

My bet originally was that Taku was the red king who got beheaded and lost all his points. Chiyu's development suggests otherwise though. I don't know if Taku saved her from something in real life, had sex with her, or simply introduced her to the Accelerated World 2 years ago.

"Backdoor" could mean a few things. The first thought was that Chiyu was dumping shit away so that Haru couldn't find the Burst Link program. The next idea was that Haru was searching through an emulated interface that Chiyu created.

The final idea at this point (and the one that makes the most sense at the moment anyway) is that someone hacked Chiyu to challenge Kuroyuki. It explains why a challenge from Kuroyuki doesn't work neither. Cyan Pile isn't available unless he's proxying through Chiyu.

She's upset that he didn't want to hang out with them anymore. I can see that being the case and I don't see any problems with her feeling that way. Haru felt he'd get in the way and left, but she never thought he was getting in the way. More than anything, she didn't want to lose a friend just because she was dating one of them.

I chucked when they introduced the premise for some fan service, but it was pretty well done - virtual hand "gestures" and all.

edit: So.. given all this, it puts my idea of Taku being the beheaded Red King in the backseat a bit. His prowess at Kendo could be contributed to his increased physical training the virtual gaming world OR to his Burst Link abilities. He doesn't seem that confident, so that's why I thought the former.. but still. Or... his lack of confidence may be because he's low on Burst Points?

The fact his girlfriend at the time was also a lvl9 also throws things out a bit for the Taku=Red theory.

Regardless, if Red's gone and Black Lotus has gone into hiding.. I wonder how the balance of 6 s maintained.
