Zoro was never anywhere as stupid as Luffy. He has atrocious navigation skills and isn't overly interested in anything outside of swords, training, fights, and booze, but that doesn't make him stupid per se. Besides, considering his previous occupation, he might have seen a bunch of hostage situations before, from the other side.
