After watching episode 5, I am completely infuriated by this fact. I'm glad that Mei pointed it out herself: The fact that the students didn't explain the "rules" to Kouichi was their first and greatest mistake. I'll state it again: I honestly don't really care who dies in the series as long as Mei "lives" in the end (because, honestly... I still think she's just a manifested spirit).
I was disappointed with the explanation that Mei gave though. The events are started when the class has one extra person? What kind of lame trigger is that? I really hope that was a misdirect. Maybe Mei was annoyed that Kouchi was digging into her secrets, so she fabricated the story. I mean, the scene of glasses-girl being completely horrified at the sight of Kouchi and Mei is still a strong indicator that she truly does not exist naturally.
But, going along with her tale, if there actually is a "dead" person among the group who doesn't realize that they are dead yet, I have to say it's most likely Kouchi. He transferred in around the beginning of the accidents (I'm pretty sure he was in the hospital when the girl died). He seems to be the closest related person to the original class 3 and subsequent incarnations (through his mother and sister(s)). And he (if we continue to believe Mei is really dead) is the first and only one (minus glasses-girl) that can see/interact with Mei (that we know of).
One last thing... I still like this series, regardless of how frustrating the characters are... but the opening totally ruins it. I used to like Ali Project, but every song sounds the same, and each one makes me think of Rozen Maiden (which I guess is somewhat fitting concerning the dolls in this series). It's also not a good song to provoke a sense of fear, or dread, or anything related to the horror genre.
It's dangerous to go alone. Take Nep.
My money is also on Kouichi being the dead person. The glasses-girl was frightened when she saw Kouichi, not Mei. She must have learned of Kouichi's death somewhere.
I'm really happy with this episode because Mei's got a friend now. :3
I suppose we were more or less on the ball with the previous theories except we had our focus entirely on Misaki as being the dead entity that everyone's trying to avoid, whereas it's actually a wildcard that no one actually knows about.
Since they don't actually have to go to class anymore, they can always play detective to find out who's dead.

Started this show yesterday evening.
Everyone is very suspicious to me, even the hospital and the school itself.
If you take a look at the school, you'll find metal parts need intense care. Not just your average wear there, clearly feels like an abandoned place.
Same goes for that hospital elevator where the nurse died.
Who is the dead one?
It could literally be everyone in the classroom, including the teachers and librarian.
They said that those who are dead without knowing it were past students coming back. Over the years, you get enough
of them to fill the classroom.
Assistant teacher is fishy too and the librarian clearly stated she already was a teacher for class 3
MC's sister Reiko seems to be dead, but there are more details:
Both grandparents seem to be affected, the guy being much too often near the altar. We sadly didn't see the pics there but the last one he's mourning probably is Reiko.
And the bird keeps welcoming not itself when calling Rei, but Reiko.
That's all for now.
All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.
Theory to who could be the "Dead One" my best bet is mainly on Kouchi mainly bcuz his mom attended the same class, not to mention the dude with the glasses (in the library) said she died halfway through the year and the accidents stopped throughout that year, now the Father also tells Kouchi how does he feel being back here after "1 and a half years" yet Kouchi has no "Memories" at all since he said he hash never been here except when he was a smaller child and has lived elsewhere the entire time, now the librarian also states that after people die or usually when the accidents never happen all the memories of the "dead one" disappear, it could be Kouchi IS in fact the "Dead One" the teacher also states that 4 years ago there was a "Dead One" who was never figured out, BUT that he reappeared in the SAME class 2 years later, and that he disappeared halfway through the first year, now when you put that with Kouchi's father's remark of being here "1 and a half years ago" Kouchi had to have attended at least the 1st half of the year, coincidence? thing is..."Who was the person 1 and a half years ago?" My guess, Kouchi himself, and my theory is one of those "He was never meant to be born" scenarios where he is and has in fact been death since birth yet remained in this work, any other theories out there? (FYI: The Anime Is Different from the Manga)

The suspense in this show is totally captivating. Sit in a dark room, have some slightly warm sound source on.. feel like death is around every corner for 20 minutes.

We're getting to the chase!! This show rocks.
Misaki can see dead people... I'm guessing the hot teacher and Akazawa.

And it seems (at least on the surface) that I'm wrong on both accounts. The teacher's prolly dead, while I doubt Misaki would have walked away from Akazawa if she was the dead one.Originally Posted by me

Yeah.. disappointed, I have to say. Stuff just got thrown at me and I just took it in without any emotions. For me every episode prior to this I absolutely loved - mysterious episodes or break-neck ep11.
I'll definitely still recommend Another, but the ending does stop me from ranking this as a perfect anime of its genre.

Well, the only thing I did not see is that Reiko is the assistant teacher. But to me they were both the best options from the very first episodes they appeared. The most obvious being Reiko because of the annoying bird and the mourning of the grandfather/father?
The assistant teacher, because it felt unnatural having one, she felt really pale in both her skin color and how passive she was at school or during all the events.
Regarding Mei, they really had to have her slow on taking any initiative, since she had a trump card from the beginning she didn't really care using. But of course, if she did, no story...

:'(. Good job on making the entire setting (Mei, doll-shop, the upper floor) totally different until the curse set in again. I can only hope Mei regained those days again.
Technically speaking, siblings are first degree relatives.
