I dunno, something tells me VanderDecken isn't the one who shot Otohime. He certainly doesn't seem particularly clever, for one thing.

True. He doesn't seem clever... but its an awful coincidence for him to be there to touch Shirahoshi just after Queen Otohime was shot. I don't think Hodi betrayed them by this point yet either. Anyway... I expect the next chapter to be half-flashback and half-present now that both 'protagonists' of the flashback are dead.

Also, the legend of the mermaid princess sounds conveniently foreshadowing of events soon to occur in fishman island. In fact, I think it ties well with a few other details. Theory time!

Luffy is the man foretold that will appear as a guide to Shirahoshi, and will change fishman island forever.
This will result in the destruction of fishman island, as foretold by madame whats-her-name (Sea Kings decimating the island).
However, ultimately it will open up the path for true coexistence, as the fishmen will subsequently migrate to the surface, and Shirahoshi will be their new leader.

question: how large is shirahoshi, actually?
is she 'Giant' size?
maybe Ussop can set her up with Elbaf's giants and have all the fishmen move in with them. I doubt marine forces will follow them if they ally with the giants.

I don't think Decker or even Hodi shot Otohime. She probably did something and forced the Tenryu to sign that contract and it's most likely the one that she saved who ended up sending assassins.
