    Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko

"Electromagnetic Wave Woman and Adolescent Man"

"* Based on a light novel series by Iruma Hitoma with illustrations by Buriki.

The story revolves around a highschool boy named Niwa Makoto. He lives with his aunt's family since his parents are away on business. It is there where he meets his mysterious cousin of the same age Touwa Erio — who happens to tie a futon mattress around her upper body and is a self-proclaimed alien. Her staple food is pizza. Erio had been missing for half a year and was found floating in the sea. She doesn't remember anything about what happened during that period of time, but she began to think that it was the act of an alien and wanders the neighbourhood wrapped in the futon." -AniDB

This show is pretty hard to judge based on a single episode. The first thing I noticed was that the main character dude (VA: Miyu Irino; Saji Crossroad of 00, Ryoushi Morino of Okami) wasn't completely passive, which is always a big plus. The rest of the characters shown so far were pretty goofy, especially the denpa girl (VA: Asuka Ougame; Mei-Shen Trinden of Regios, various roles in Sora no Otoshimono) and also the aunt (VA: Ai Nonaka; Kyouko Sakura of Madoka, Fuuko Ibuki of Clannad). I'll definitely watch at least the next ep. However, it's impossible to say how this will develop but I have my hopes up. At the very least this seems to have an atmosphere of its own.

This seems to be based on a light novel, and usually that is a good sign.

I really like the otaku references and lingo. I don't like that I understand them so well.

I hated how the VA for Erio opted to talk with what sounded like she was sticking her tongue out the whole time. That was so annoying.

Towa Meme, is this an atempt at "Toi même" in french meaning "Yourself"?

Other than that, I almost wanted to label that first ep as "WTF", like the C something anime...

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.

"Meme" is actually written with two 「女」(woman) in kanji, that's why she said "You can call me Jojo", which is another way of pronouncing those kanji.

GotWoot is close to releasing the first episode, and our release will actually make sense (if you read all 13 TL notes), so rewatch Ep1 with that :P

I have absolutely no understanding of Japanese, I was just having fun with that romaji translation that is so near to a meaning in another language. It might happen here and there, I caught that one

Waiting for the release then, thanks for the clarification, and also the explanation for Jojo, as I would never have guessed.

8th Sin, I'm glad Gotwoot has you to do this series for us. I wanted to assist, but life gets in the way.

Do as many complex and detailed TL notes as you can. I assure you, I will read them (and make them a religion) and they will not be wasted.

This kind of series is "delicious" for TLs, don't you agree?

Glad to be working with you guys

Translating 'Denpa' has surely been fun, most Shaft series of late must be "delicious" or "nightmarish" depending on who you ask

One of my biggest regret as a fansubber is actually having watched 'Bakemonogatari' immediately after it finished airing like I usually do. I'm certain I would've joined some group (or even formed one) to TL it if I saw the first episode on air date, as none of the releases so far do it justice to this day.

This is a pretty hard show to judge since it seems to rely so much (or rather, only) on strange characters, and to be honest after the second ep I was getting bored of Erio, the other main character, which isn't really a good sign. However, after Meme's huge tease (I honestly like scenes like that a lot more than the traditional cheap boob/pantsu glimpse ecchi scenes), Makoto's really ruthless speech to Erio, and how things ended up in the third ep, I'm looking forward to the continuation quite heavily.

And I still can't deny the fact the art is really pretty.

    [Gotwoot] Denpa Onna - 04v2
    [Mazui] Denpa Onna - 05

    -----------------

One thing I started to notice in episode 5 is that Erio and Meme share a lot of common expressions (head tilts, the way they smile, etc.) and none of the other characters do those things in the same way. It's a very subtle thing, but very touching in a way. You can see that even if Meme was/is a bit distant toward Erio, they are still very much mother and daughter.

Erio's eyes are a different shape, but they still look and act more alike than I ever thought they would given the earlier episodes.

Shaft gets huge credit for pulling this effect off.

Yeah, that's very true. They look like a mom and daughter, despite all the differences. Ironically enough Meme is now more weird than Erio, after Erio stopped believing in being an alien. Makoto is managing to keep his head admirably cool in the middle of all that, even if Erio's cuteness sometimes renders him speechless for a moment.

More alluring lips and crescent-moon smiles:

[Mazui] Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - 13

    --------------

What a way for this series to go out. Blow the doors off everything that he believed. It was very mature of him to start to try to rationalize it away, yet deciding that wouldn't be right and accept that he simply lost. Hopefully this incident will change Niwa's rather blasé attitude about everything.

The Ryuuko scenes were cute, and her declaration that he'd have to pay her back was great, especially when she failed to maintain the act just a few seconds longer, and ran off in tears. Somehow, I still prefer Maekawa over Ryuuko, even though she is far more expressionless. She's got a maturity that Ryuuko lacks. That's not a strike against Ryuuko, her innocence and uncontrollable bashfulness is part of her charm.

Despite all the other ecchi series I've watched, this one still somehow comes off as one of the most alluring. It's not overt such as throwing boobs in the viewer's face. There are few (if any) panty shots. It's all from facial expressions and hand movements, and those lovely crescent-moon smiles.

Yeah, I was surprised by the sudden jump to supernatural, as short as it was. Although to be fair most of the show was about Niwa trying to rationalize everything, so it was a very limited point of view, and thus never stated to be the true one.

A nice last episode in any case. Maekawa would have been my choice as well, if for nothing else, then for simple peace of mind. Although adolescence points aren't probably counted from peace of mind...
