Why did Naruto have to enter Kyuubi chakra mode to break free when he was already in Sage mode? Surely he was strong enough at that point anyway.

He has to find them. But teleporting won't do much, he has to sedate them as well, and these are the toughest of the tailed-beasts.
I doubt it, he found Naruto back then with no problem at ALL, with his "becoming untouchable" skill and plant guy`s chakra drain technique, they should be no problem at all, screw it, just leave them in his universe for 2 day, they`ll pass out from lack of water.
