loved the beginning, hoping that we won't actually see all those scenes.

The next few episodes are called "Archer Vice" and they travel to Miami so yeah we will definitely see those scenes.
For God will not permit that we shall know what is to come... those who by some sorcery or by some dream might come to pierce the veil that lies so darkly over all that is before them may serve by just that vision to cause that God should wrench the world from its heading and set it upon another course altogether and then where stands the sorcerer? Where the dreamer and his dream?
I kinda skipped those scenes in a "wtf is dis. preview?" moment.

Yikes, here's hoping they get some renewed vision and fresh ideas for these new seasons, because 5 has been pretty bad so far. They've gotten too far from their roots, and all we get are some pretty obnoxious characters. Not lovable obnoxious like Homer Simpson, more unbearable obnoxious like Fox News pundits.

It's funny in its way but not the usual Archer funny from the first 4 seasons. The change of professions and purposes doesn't help. Cheryl as a country singer? Meh. Pam as a coke fiend? Was funny the first couple episodes; got tired after that. Archer is no longer a suave badass spy; now he's a bumbling fool. Lana the pregnant soon-to-be single mother got old even faster than some of the other bits.
The Simpsons was great early on, then sucked for a while, then was funny again, and I haven't watched any of the recent episodes. Pretty much all the seasons with Al Jean as exec producer are funny. That guy is a comedy genius.

Episode 9:
Man this episode really wasn't that funny. I only laughed out loud like once. Disappointing season continues..
The previous episode was pretty good too; they relied heavily on old jokes but it worked without looking like they were trying too hard.
I actually liked this latest episode more than I expected (probably had low expectations because of your post) but it really was short on laughs. As usual, Krieger's few lines/scenes are the best ones in the episode.

I think the show's prime was definitely during that string of episodes with the ear-ringing and tenitis.
MAP. MMMMAAAPPPP.
I liked the early episodes best, seasons 1 and 2. I think one problem that may be from the success of the show, the writers/producers/voice actors are busy with other projects and all their creativity and energy goes into those works instead of this show, which is good for them but also a shame.

Yeah, they're really taking Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist too far.
I was actually psyched about the first episode because I knew there was no way ISIS was legitimate and I thought Malory was finally getting her comeuppance. But no such luck.
Lana is the ONLY character on the show you still want to root for, and it breaks suspension of disbelief that she hasn't simply left already.
The last 3 episodes have been painful. It's just 3 characters taking turns fucking up, then bitching about what fuckups the other two are. Over and over and over and over and over.
Archer always was an asshat, but he was such a badass that you didn't care or mind so much. He always said the right (clever) thing and worked things out, for better or worse. Now he's reduced to a bumbling tool and his assholishness is unbearable. This has the added effect of highlighting the worst qualities of the other characters as they bitch about each other.
I'd love for them to further explore ISIS's legitimacy and get back to their espionage roots. All of these other endeavors have this "fish out of water" triteness to them that has turned well-liked characters into obnoxious idiots. I used to not hate Cyril.
I really hope they turn things around, instead of running a once great series into the ground. I didn't hate the last few episodes, but they could have been so much more.

Completely agree. His dickishness was balanced by the fact that he was genuinely good at being a spy. But he's terrible at everything else. Drug running. Astronaut. Etc. So when he's not being a spy, he's just the worst person in the world. But he just assumes he's as good at everything else as he is at being a spy.
I really wanted him to die in the space shuttle crash when he wouldn't let Cyril land the thing.
Well, it became pretty obvious about halfway through the series that all of their missions seemed to be for Malory's personal benefit. So I wonder if ISIS was EVER a legitimate government agency.
I liked the few times they showed a more introspective side to Archer, like when his maybe-father died because of his selfishness. But then they fail to explore that, which I guess would be out of character for him but more meaningful than what they've done with him this season.
I didn't hate him as an astronaut, especially when he went commando and single-handedly took out the renegade astronauts. Not letting Cyril fly the shuttle is in line with his character, and though it was obnoxious, it made up for him restraining himself from fighting Cyborg Barry in that Alien forklift suit. However, they kinda made up for any idiocy when he was unscathed and everyone else was hurt from the crash. That was pretty hilarious.I really wanted him to die in the space shuttle crash when he wouldn't let Cyril land the thing.
I don't know that ISIS being Malory's personal spy agency was a story unto itself, more just a story device to give the show a background. If it does have more significance, I wish they'd explore that. What with all the tension between the world and Russia going on, next season would be perfect for them to make a return to spying in Russia.Well, it became pretty obvious about halfway through the series that all of their missions seemed to be for Malory's personal benefit. The first part of Palace Intrigue is pretty good. Some snappy lines and funny stuff going on.

I ragged on the series pretty hard in different online venues, but the last two episodes of season 5 are awesome. The dialogue is witty and well-timed, the story is funny, and the characters are at their best. Makes me hope well for season 6, but we'll see.
