If you must have a cd-key you should buy a legit one. Otherwise do an install without the cd-key and apply a crack. You can find those on any torrent site. Just make sure you read the comments page on those torrents for viruses.

But you're better off DLing a pre-cracked OEM version without ever installing the WGA update. I use BIE's version, works good.

Despite getting an OEM version Win 7 Pro was about the most expensive component of my mid-range computer. It's annoying. I wish MS had better competition to lower the prices. It's not like they actually needed so much money pouring in.

Why didn't you just call your cousin, Assassin?

    Ditto as Killa-Eyez.

Fresh install without key; apply a activation crack; and follow up with a crack for windows genuine activation. If you've got an enterprise copy, it will give you a bit more trouble; but other than that, just check the comments on torrent pages before applying.

I have a windows 7 pro flash drive that i made from a dell windows 7 dvd. It's worked great the few times I've used it and seems faster than installing from optical media.

I should also do that. For some reason my Win 7 Pro DVD reads really slowly. I suspected it contains near critical levels of read errors but who knows. I made a back-up of it, but it might indeed be nicer to get a usb stick large enough. Although it's not like I'm planning to install this thing three times anymore like I did after I built the computer and was encountering hardware troubles...

    7ULTx64-BIE

In the past I also used this version.

If you're going to use the cd you got from your cousin, do a clean install without entering a cd-key and use this activation crack. Be sure that when updating the WGA tool, a.k.a "Update for Windows (for x64-based Systems) (KB971033)", is NOT selected and hide it so it won't bother anymore. If you really need software from M$ that requires a genuine validation, I suggest you keep searching for a crack till you find one that works (for now) as M$ keeps updating against this. Good luck!

    I use Windows.7.Ultimate.ENG.x86-x64.Activated-NeedZ myself
It is pre activated nothing to do at all,
it passes windows genuine updating updates
    .

Dunno if you can get it of public trackers though, look around.

I directly used the USB method from first install because I can't stand the sound of the CD/DVD player during install. And fast it was to install. One should'nt even think twice and do it that way from first install. It's easy to get a cheap usb drive by converting an old hdd with a sub 15$ usb enclosure. It really does the trick and you know that the second time you have to install, you have win lots of time.

Regarding the validation before getting updates, I do not remember the trick I used, but searching the KB number sometimes gives you a page from MS with no validation needed. I can't remember the trick, was useful when downloading it from another browser than IE.

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.

thanx for all the links guys....so far i've used a produckt key i found to do the install and have turned off the updates. i wasnt sure you could even do an installation without putting in a cd key....wouldnt the "next" button simply not appear until you put in a key?

I mite try to find that pre activated version DS posted to save myself the hassle of reading thru techno gibberish and downloading various cracks and loaders.

im really dreading doing it all over again though.....maybe i can just leave the updates off and be done with it. I mean, the comp is for my parents mainly and they really dont need much except internet access.

You`ll have to register to see the thread, but there`s a massive amount of OS, i`m sure they have the right one for you.

    i use "Microsoft.Windows.7.ULTIMATE.x64.Integrated.Decem ber.2009.OEM.DVD-BIE".

Best version i found so far (of course there is probably a newer version out, like June.2010 or something). Those OEM versions don't need a CD-key or registration. If i have understood it right they don't really come with that to begin with. It's meant that they should be pre-installed on complete company computer packages. Usually they are locked to the motherboard on that computer so I.E if you upgrade your motherboard the OS stops working. And that is what BiE has removed. The motherboard lock. Or it's some kind of master version meant for support to quickly be able to do a clean wipe and then just put in the OS no matter what motherboard and setup it uses.

Anyways i have installed the WGA updates that come through windows updates without any problems. So far problem free.

So IMO go with a OEM version from BiE so you can be free of worrying about the updates, and no need for any hassle while installing. I've never had any problems with it and neither have 2 of my friends that uses the same version. And it really doesn't matter if you use an old OEM version or a new one. Only difference is that the new will have more updates already installed. So old just means more updates trough windows updates. It's better to take an old one from a safe and reliable source then to take a new one from TPB where half the comment section is filled with "TROJAN", "VIRUS" and "Fake upload. It's Disney's "The Little Mermaid" DVD-R".

No, it's not necessary to input a cd-key. Wether you put one in or not, you're still gonna have to activate your windows within 30 or 60 days (not sure). Disabling updates is never a good thing to do with windows as a lot of them are security updates. Meaning the lesser the updates, the more vulnerable the windows. So when you have to install windows again, make sure to use one of the versions we've listed. A pre-activated one.

Then again it could be your cousin already gave you a pre-activated one rendering all of the above useless. You can check this by clicking the right mouse button on Computer and select Properties. It should be displayed at the bottom.
