Yeah first half was classic example of Shounen Stretching but once we got to White Beards Tsunami of awesome it was on.
Pacing is a tad weird though. As opposed to adapting a full chapter their choosing to stop one or two pages before the end to build cliff hangers as opposed to just using all the content.
Although it's pretty obvious that the scope of the White Beard war taxed oda to the extreme seeing that when it was being published he often would do 17 or even 15 page chapters as opposed to the usual 19. Hell he even took breaks.
But still so happy to see this finally getting animated.
The cliffhangers in the anime are dumb, though. They're not even at good spots. Last week's cliffhanger was whitebeard shouting that he told Ace to go after Blackbeard. Yank yank. In the manga it was the scene where the two tidal waves were about to crash down on Marineford. Now instead that cliffhanger was reserved for a commercial break. In the previous episode it was Whitebeard's ship flying through the sky in the cheesiest way possible. It's just flat-out poor pacing.
As far as filler content goes, though, they definitely added a bit more fluff to the opening fight sequence, which I quite enjoyed. There's a lot of room for extra content as long as they don't waste too much of it with people just "thinking" the same thing over and over. Tashigi analyzing Mihawk's sword was cool, but otherwise it was just:
(Mihawk jumps up onto the ledge)
"Looks like Mihawk is going to make a move."
"So Mihawk is going to fight, that's unlike him."
"Oh, so you want to fight, Mihawk?"

Well he was a Captain when he was introduced, and he's a Commodore in the scene he shows up in after Enies Lobby.
He even talked about how he needed a higher rank if he was going to be allowed to hunt the Strawhats in the New World.
It's in Chapter 439.

Kind of ironic that Smoker is only really getting stronger because he wants to catch Luffy. He had a Logia power since his introduction, yet he was only a "captain". He seemed pretty happy to just catch goons at Roguetown.
I got my fingers crossed that Whitebeard kills off one of the Admirals and then Smoker gets promoted to Admiral.
Man, i also hated the pacing in this episode.
In the manga it took two pages (if you don't count the flashback) between whitebeard using his fruit and the tsunami showing up, so it had a bit of a "surprise attack" feel. It took like 10 minutes of staring and another 2-3 of random buggy exposition before anything happened. I really hope they don't keep this up and removed any feeling of urgency or frantic from this arc.
