The fanservice armor was already ridiculous but she apparently had a backup in case it broke? Not to mention the size seems to change at the animator's wishes

Lisa is very cute but i'm gonna get pissed if someone cuts her hair like the opening seems to imply, long hair cut short never looks good on anime girls

Also every sword in this story are apparently made out of Play-Doh

Ranting aside, the story seems a bit cliché but i think i'll enjoy watching it through the end for its badass male lead, good action and cute loli elf

this episode was good. i like this series. Cecily really reminds me a ton of Louise from ZnT. the beginning with the talk of the war, it reminded me of The Record of the Lodoss War

and speaking of ZnT, is the OP by the same person who did the ZnT OPs? it really sounds similar.

I'm going to have to agree with Archie. No way in hell are they similar, except for maybe the fact that they're terrible at what they do? However, Louise had an excuse.

yeah, there's the fact that she's useless. i dunno, i guess it's the blushing from the first episode and when she was sitting on the desk at the end complaining to the other chick about the blacksmith..

though not super similar, she definitely is showing some kugimiya-tsundere mannerisms.

was it just me or was there something off with gg's subs this week?

    oh, I forgot.
    KATANA! wank, wank, wank!
super special awesome amazing! better than anything else. please make me a katana! and I'll be your bitch forever! wank wank!

with the sword polishing out of the way, I can say that Luke seemed like much better character this episode, complete with nosebleed and a personality.

Loli elf is probably the ultimate sword, but she needs the power of love (tm) in order to grow into her true form of ass-slaying. an anime is never complete without forcing 'it was destined to be' romance between the two leads, go figure.

it looks like this show is going to have a relatively large amount of characters: the main trio, the girl busters, the loli four, the bishonen evils (all with fancy names, like Siegried, and probably Nevhuadnetzer).

and also, why does it take her an entire day to ask "did you just magic yourself a sword?"
and not play it straight like:
"a Katana is a blade that's been folded many times over, with precise planning and careful ..."
"wait, that sounds like it takes a long time"
    "well, it does"
"no. he just created one out of the air, there wasn't even a fire when he did it"

still better than first ep, of course.

sig made by Itachi-y2k5, thanks, dude!
Currently Watching: probably a show directed at 9 years old girls, lets be honest.

I must say I enjoyed how Cecily got so bent out of shape that Luke wouldn't forge her a free sword out of the kindness of his heart. It was especially moving when she criticized him for not meeting her expectation of a 'good' person by being unwilling to give away the fruits of his labors to a petulant novice he just met. It really helped to accent what I dislike about her character (type). It showed that she is self-centered and carries a sense of entitlement several miles wide. This, combined with her rather poor display of skill and clear lack of practical experience in the first ep makes for a grade A hypocritical fool who doesn't know her ass from a hole in the ground yet can still hold in her head the idea that the world should bend to her will because she was born so speshul.

About the only thing I find more detestable than her attitude is the inevitability that the plot will push her up in importance and apparent skill level (via magical sword of victory hax perhaps?) validating and inflating her ego through undeserved and/or unearned opportunities and victories. Now that I think about it she reminds me a lot of Luke from Tales of the Abyss another main character I loved to hate. I'm hoping Cecily gets a similar sort of wake up call moment where her foolishness directly causes harm and destruction to the innocents she claims to serve.

If Cecily is going to go down the Luke fon Fabre route though then I hope the supporting cast expands more either quantitatively or qualitatively. It usually takes several likable supporting characters to balance my dislike for main characters like Cecily is shaping up to be.

about 80% of all lead characters are like cecily... I can't find anything wrong with her

your typical newb at the beginning, awesome and strong at the end character
and because she is female, she is tsundere.

If you think 80% of fictional stories follow the shounen hero archetype you might want to consider expanding your horizons a bit and reevaluating. Count up all the shounen hero leads in all the series that started this fall and divide by the number of series. I'd be quite impressed if the number even breaks 50%.

That being said, even if Cecily type characters were the norm in fiction it wouldn't change the fact that some people, particularly me, enjoy the absurdity of the archetype. Characters like Cecily who talk a big game in episode one but turn out to suck make characters who talk a big game in episode one and can actually back it up (in episode one) look even better to me.

    [gg] Sacred Blacksmith 03

    ---------------------------------

This series has developed a glacial pace edging on White Album levels. Cecily still is pretty useless, and even more people are calling her out on it. While it is great that a demon sword that has only known bloodshed finds her endearing, she is still a complete failure.

I don't blame her for being a coward because she's never killed anyone. That is fairly understandable. Real soldiers and those who are so called knights merely because of their family name are very different. I'm sure getting blood splashed on your face is disturbing, and her reaction was natural.

What I am afraid of is that Aria will be inspired by Cecily's so called courage and innocence to enable her to become an amazing fighter without any actual practice, which is what she needs the most. But of course, she'll only kill those who have fully accepted the contract. Not the zombies she failed to kill this episode.

Nothing can change the fact that Cecily can't fight. Lisa still knows more about swordplay than Cecily does. She even has terrible form in the OP. I would hope that after Aria allows Cecily to wield her, Cecily spends the vast majority of the time learning to actually use a sword, but I'm afraid that won't be the case, and she magically be super powerful while still being terrible. Like the other soldier said, if you don't know how to use a sword properly, you're just going to end up destroying it, failing to protect anyone, and probably get yourself killed. They tried to make him look like an asshole after Aria's story when he said that swords are only for killing, but that is exactly what they are for. When you are "protecting" someone with a sword, you're still killing something else to do so. Blocking with a sword is a great way to break it as well.

I don't want to hate this series, it has a good premise and setting, but Cecily is really pushing it. At least in Scrapped Princess, everyone (including herself) knew that Pacifica was pretty much helpless.

Aye. Cecily certainly reached an all time low easily in this episode. She was happily swinging a sword around all the time but indeed it apparently never visited her mind that a sword is a weapon and the primary function of a weapon is to kill. The asshole knight did know exactly what he saw in Cecily.

Besides, what's there to save anymore in those zombies? The bugs had already eaten their brains, after all. Cecily hesitating against them didn't even really make a whole lot of sense. Even if she didn't know exactly how the bugs operated since even the more more experienced soldiers didn't, she still was told by Aria they are beyond salvation already and she did see the bloody worm bugs clearly enough, indicating there's something really wrong with the opponents.

Oh, well, despite Cecily being a hopeless character at least we still have Luke and Lisa. There seems to be something peculiar about Lisa like this episode suggested a couple of times. Maybe she's even a sword herself. Or a hammer...

The worthless female lead, a rare treat in the world of anime

My interest on this show is shrinking with each ep, i don't think i'll be watching many more eps if this keeps up

If you are watching this instead of Letter Bee, watch that instead. Slow start, but it has better animation/music/characters!!!/loli.

I am really disappointed by this show. It had such a great idea and they ruined it by slapping on tons of shounen nonsense and boring/stupid characters. A blacksmith anime would have been absolutely awesome, if the main character actually made swords instead of fighting with a katana, brooding, or bickering with probably one of the worst non-joke(?) female character in recent anime history.

    /rant

I am still going to watch it though.

-Luke in the OP reminded me of Sasuke.

-I'm more patient with Cecily being useless, since the OP hints she will undergo some dedicated sword training. I was scared for a second since I could have confused her for the other redhead with longer hair later in the OP, but I'm pretty confident it's her since the other three featured together form the main four characters.

-I suspected Lisa was a sword since episode 2, when Luke said women were not allowed in the room where he works. I actually thought she would be Cecily's sword until they introduced Aria. She's definitely a spirit of some sort, and she had an interesting expression when Cecily asked why the store was named Liza. Perhaps her late relative (mother?) owned the place or something.

Nah, they will have to collect 3 more swords that are like Aria and then they will fuse through loli-elf to achieve great imba powah, of course swords gonna get stolen/raped/lost few times to keep story going...

But if they make it pretty decent instead of typical shounen bullshit for kids it might be pretty good. Just add a bit darker theme...

well, episode three out of the (I've been busy this week).

say you're one of those city guards. you're a decent guy, not half bad warrior, and you do your best living in a city that happens to be attacked by monsters every now and then.
But it's fine, since you have friends in the squad, and the commander is a respected war-hero.

but then, the city gets a new awesome sword, of course, you don't expect yourself to be that one who wields it, but hey, I bet the commander will take it, or maybe one of the promising younger fighters. at any case, who ever ends using it, he'll use it and help you win fights with less casualties.

but no. they go off and hand the sword to that snotty girl that always messes up and you have to wipe her ass. and now there are even more enemies coming to the town, because of the sword.
and friends start dying. because you weren't trained, or armed, to fight this kind of thing. and the commander, he's got his head stuck in some high, fancy politics involving you-don't-know-what and you-don't-care-who.there's no end for this shit in sight, and there's no promotion to look forward to, and it seems like the higher ups are just counting on you guys to die for their sake while they treat the entire thing as a power struggle.
wouldn't you think, even once, just to sell out the stink girl and the sword, get tons of money and move to the opposing side, heck, that will even protect the rest of the squad, since the enemies would get what they wanted, and won't have to attack the city no more.

    what I'm trying to say.
    A. it's really dangerous for the city guard to know who's carrying the super sword, for that reason.
    B. The armor the city guards looks weird. notice how the armor is open at the same spot that grants you points in a kendo match? those are the points that even having armor won't grant you complete defense, not wearing any armor will get you killed if you're hit there. and that's before questioning the lack or helmets (it would have saved them from the brain bug)
    C. Their swords suck. it's not only, even the guy with zwienhelder (or what's it's called) needs to get a new sword every now and then (and that thing is a giant clad of iron, dammit, it's mostly durable for a sword). shouldn't they get a egg-grown sword? especially with all the monsters running around.

everything that needs to be said about Cecily and the tsundere's-like antics of her and Luke, was said earlier.

sig made by Itachi-y2k5, thanks, dude!
