... why?
What does UN-TAN even mean?
Alright ep. Mostly setup though.

The art is awful. This is the first time I've complained about Oda art. Usually it's whimsical and fun, if odd, but every one of the Amazons is awful. They look "the same" in the manga, but somehow not as ugly. I don't think you should animate tall chibi adults.

"After all, I am strangely colored."
Anime drawings not done by mangaka? Yes? Its the studio that you should be complaining about?
I don't know, it just freaked me out to see the Amazons move. Every one of them is deformed.

"After all, I am strangely colored."
Decent ep, but did they miss to sub a few short phrases here and there?
And Luffys 'narration' at the next ep preview wasnt subbed either, or did MPC mess things up on my side? ;P

Was the royal assistant person there voiced by the same person as Chopper?
Also, I've never liked Oda's character designs, but the amazons are particularly terrible. Half of them look like bobbleheads. And no, it's not the anime's fault, they look like that in the manga too.
How is the uncanny valley applicable here? The amazon characters look completely inhuman, but they still freak you out. Isn't that the opposite of the Uncanny valley?Originally Posted by poopdeville
They're not so inhuman though. They're just freakishly out of proportion.Originally Posted by DarthEnder
From that Wikipedia article, "A similar problem exists in realistic 3D computer animation, such as with the films Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within,[3] The Polar Express,[3] and Beowulf.[4]"
Also, the Valley explicitly contains "distorted" representations of humans, like puppets and zombies.

And just for kicks,
"After all, I am strangely colored."
Hah, thats awesome!

I never experienced uncanny valley with Spirits Within or Beowulf but I definitely did Polar Express.
Nobody is curious as to what exactly is on their backs?
I sure was when i first read it in the manga

Didnt they say they had eyes on their backs? from that Gorgon thing they killed before?

i had read the page on that uncanny valley and i didnt really ever experince it in any animation or picture or anything.... but that mario picture almost made me sick when i first seen it... not sure why at all though lol.
Then wouldn't Luffy have turned to stone?Originally Posted by Penner

Ye i actually wondered why he didnt turn into stone, perhaps they need to do that hand-sign she did when she turned the Navy crew into stone to activate the "skill" or whatever it is.
Or he's just immune because hes rubber (doesnt make much sense at all tho..)
Also, he said he's seen whatever it is on her back before, didnt he?
I'm really curious as to what that might be now -.-
Edit:
Come to think of it, Boa didnt even show the Navy fellas her back and they still turned to stone, so the need to actually see whatever is on her back doesnt seem to be required for the stone transformation to work.

No, actually my objective was to get the anime viewers to ask that question and get discussion rolling on the actual episode as opposed to valley theories and what notOriginally Posted by depthcharge
Obviously the gorgon story is a lie to make sure nobody looks at whatever is on their backs.
Whatever it is is probably important, but I couldn't begin to guess what it is.
All I can think about watching that scene is that if that was Sanji instead of Luffy he'd have died of a heart attack already.
And her back probably wouldn't have been the first place he would look atOriginally Posted by DarthEnder
