Anyway, was there a special team involved in the production of bleach 219? It's like it's a different anime... just too awesome to be a bleach episode.

Yes there are several episodes throughout the series, notably Ichigo's first bankai fight and the Grimmjow fights, that use different animation. Just like the Rock Lee fights in Naruto.
