    Microsoft Dreamspark

I found this site when I was trying to get a copy of 2003 server last week, one of the torrent comments was "its just a dreamspark edition"

anyhow.. if you're a current student, you're eligible. I just got my login today. Not a huge amount of software, but it's free and legal.

    Applications include :

    Windows 2008 server
    Windows 2003 server
    Visual studio 2005
    SQL Server 2008
    XNA Game Studio

then they have some visual express edition titles which are already a free download. Downside is that it looks like they're x86 versions, so I'm not going to install 2008 server as my OS since I have 8gb of ram.

That is true if it is the Standard edition they have there. Enterprise and Datacenter supports up to 64GB RAM even with the x86 versions.
I'm using windows server 2008 Enterprise x86 right now with 8GB, and it works just fine, and can utilize all 8GB.

Edit: Nevermind, checked the site myself, they only had the Standard version. I'm currently using the up to 240 days trial of Enterprise myself.
