Same here, my laptop never had any problems with HD until the 1080p releases started coming.

Also it played the 1080p sample movie on crunchyroll perfectly, so i'm lead to believe that the problem lies with Horrible subs

afaik 1080p just means it has a resolution of 1920×1080. different 1080p vids can have different frame rates and bitrates, which make all the difference.
so you may be able to play some and not others.

@Coldpower your chip is barely a year old i don't think you're any kind of benchmark for determining if someone's hardware is too underpowered to handle something. There are people still running on P4's (like me). Has anyone with a sub 3GHz P4 had any success playing the 1080p releases without lag? And if so with what?
This lagging....does it lag over time? If so, does it take a long time to become apparent (eg, till half way through the episode), or is it really noticable right away? It runs no problem on our E8400 and E6600 (Intel dual core 3.0GHz and 2.4Ghz respectively), so I'll try it on our Athlon 64 3500+ (single core 2.2GHz) and see what I get.

I take it you mean the video's lagging? That's what I got. It's 1080p, so having the picture lag due to lack of processing power only makes sense. Audio's still good old 384kbps or whatever they used.Originally Posted by digitalrurouni
The 2.2GHz AMD is fine for roughly 50/50 of the time. Sometimes it'll lag behind the audio, and sometimes it'll catch up and play fine.
For reference, the 2.2GHz plays 720p video fine, and a 2~3 year old 2.4GHz Dual Core plays 1080p at roughly 35~55% total CPU usage.

The important thing to remember about dual core processors is that playing a video stream is inherently not parallelizable. In particular, this means that you can't devote multiple cores to playing a video.
This is important, because if playing a video is taking up 50% of a Core 2 Duo, it means it is taking 100% of a single core. If it needs more than a single core, it won't play.
MKV files are just a container format. If you have been able to play MP4 or AVI etc formatted H.264 1080p video before, you should be able to play the Naruto files. On the other hand, the amount of CPU needed to decompress H.264 is encoder-dependent.
Powerfull processors are one thing but if you're running a slightly older system like I was (up to 2 weeks ago) DXVA (that's Direct X Video Acceleration) can help.
The real trick is finding a media player that supports dxva with the necessary codecs built in. Sadly the only one I know of that requires ati radeon hd or nvidia 8/9000 series graphics accelerator or better (but at least it's free software) -

It does however have a native 64bit client for you 64bit XP/Vista users. If you go this route do read the DXVA Support page it contains important information on the best way to utilize dxva - so happens to be dependant on operating system.
I was able to run my Athlon 2500+ mobile /w AGP HD2600xt Radeon and it handled playback quite well for the Naruto subs anywhere between 5 to 30% using the haali codec (it's the only one that wouldn't stutter the dattebayo subs) on XP 32bit
Unfortunately for me the lunar anime dvd fansub of Macross Frontier was a different story though during the heavily subtitled music scenes with alot of talking took up to 80% cpu power or better with frame skips under the renderless vmr9 output method.
I bought into bluray over christmas and certain movies would drop frames so thats why I upgraded

Yeah. I won't care a bit as a mod because the episode indeed sucked so much that the technical aspects of the encoding are far more interesting than any story content you might find with a magnifying glass...

In fact, take all the good stuff from this filler arc and you'll probably have 3 or 4 chapters of the original manga ( i'm assuming they won't stretch this crap out much longer )

Actually... that scene never took place in the manga. Its just the cover of volume 42. Im amazed they can make a more quality scene with JUST a cover... yet fail to make the rest of the episode enjoyable.
About the encode of the episode... I don't have any trouble running the 1080p nor I have lag. Yet I bought a new computer just 4 months ago, since my previous one died on me (which couldn't even run the Code Geass R2 releases)

So yeah...
I have an Intel QX 9650 oclocked to 3.4 ghz and 4 gb of RAM and running XP x64. I did not have any lag issues if I just left the screen at 1920 x 1080 meaning I didnt full screen MPC-HC. My screens native res is 2560 x 1600 and when I did fullscreen the window the lag started to become very unacceptable. I just went with the 720p version.
Well processing power definitely isn't your problem, and your CPU usage to decode the video will be the same whether you watch it normally, blown full screen or minimized to the task bar.
