I probably had better enjoyment watching Season 1, but I'm glad they changed the way things went in Season 2. It provided balance, as well as portraying the happy, (relatively) carefree school life, and the harsh realities of the adult world.
At school, you had fun. Friends were around you, mucking around was the norm, and it's probably the best time of your life.
After that, life gets harder. Friends are still friends, but they can't always be there anymore. You have to face things on your own, and when you can't, you fall. A helping hand may come your way, but it's ultimately your own two feet that get you standing again, requiring both physical and mental strength.
In the end, I'm glad Clannad turned out to be not just laughs and comedy, but a rather good take on one character's struggles to become a man.
