I could really go for that beach episode. Too bad...
Whatever, Clannad after story was doomed for failure after episode 16 anyway
I just hoper we get some spin-offs with endings featuring different girls
Is Clannad rather popular in Japan? I mean,...they could just make a weekly-soap out of it, never ending. Following all the other characters, watching them getting older, their kids growing up...both seasons of Clannad featured such a...comfortable atmosphere that i could watch this show forever.

Quit ragin. The melodrama was present in all of Season 1.
I probably had better enjoyment watching Season 1, but I'm glad they changed the way things went in Season 2. It provided balance, as well as portraying the happy, (relatively) carefree school life, and the harsh realities of the adult world.
At school, you had fun. Friends were around you, mucking around was the norm, and it's probably the best time of your life.
After that, life gets harder. Friends are still friends, but they can't always be there anymore. You have to face things on your own, and when you can't, you fall. A helping hand may come your way, but it's ultimately your own two feet that get you standing again, requiring both physical and mental strength.
In the end, I'm glad Clannad turned out to be not just laughs and comedy, but a rather good take on one character's struggles to become a man.

I agree with animus, most of the story arcs in season 1 involved tragedy of some sort. Tomoya was a victim of domestic abuse with a permanent injury to show for it, Nagisa couldn't finish a school term because of her illness and was all alone at school, Fuuko was an astral projection of a girl in a coma, Kotomi's parents died tragically when she was a little kid, etc. The big difference was during season 1 most characters were shielding away their issues since all that stuff had happened in the past. Plus, as the characters pasts were unraveled in season 1 there was lots of comedy mixed in from the supporting cast to dampen the effect of the individual focus characters drama.
Still, for people who prefer everything to work out like in a Dr. Seuss book or a Disney movie I can see how After Story would seem like a poor sequel.
Things worked out pretty magically in After Story as well, don't you think? Nagisa didn't die after all, not to mention Ushio (fortunately). It was all a dream. Sounds like Disney actually...
I suppose you're right they were technically Disney deaths, however Disney usually doesn't let viewers focus on the angst associated with the death of a character for too long before revealing that the character was really just stunned.
If a happy ending is presented, then it's fine in my book. I really wouldn't want to see what would happen to Tomoya if he saw Ushio die, if the animation team was that evil.
I am training in the shadows.

After cooling my head from that show, After Story was fine. Reasons already explained.
Add for me a bit of hypnotisation coming from the tunes that were simple, 2 or 3 only, and repetitive, but didn't bother me (and I can't explain why)

I really loved the way they did AS as well. I can't remember how many episodes in a row where I had tears. Yeah, it was "magical" the way it ended, but the process of getting there, as mentioned, was really very emotional.
The "Motion Picture" just released...was that an older movie? Is it worth watching?

I would recommend you (and anyone else) to watch it if you liked After Story, and just for completeness' sake. Watch it especially if you thought the After Story (TV) ending felt cheap. The movie does the ending better IMO.
Movie comments (and hence potential spoilers) follow:
-----------------------------------------------
The first part of the movie felt really inferior to Clannad. The voices took a bit of getting used to. Nagisa was waaaay too, I don't know, cheezy? Tomoya was really cold, much more so than the anime. At first it made me felt like I didn't want to watch him, but it may or may not be a more accurate adaptation of Tomoya from the visual novel.
The way the characters were drawn also felt pretty wacky. You might attribute it to simply the "art style", but the way they were drawn with a weird mix of proportions and detail (Nagisa and Kyou were the most prominant) reminds me of hentai (which aren't exactly renown for their awesome art skills).
The use of lighting wasn't really "bad". I'll just leave it as being different.
Maybe it was that, plus the less effective comical relief compared Clannad that made it feel subpar.
Nagisa's solo, and everything else onwards though, was where this movie shone. While the whole dream/play sequence was glossed over in the anime, they went through it all in detail here. The use of imagery and showing of backstage work really brought out a theatrical feel to the entire scene that was absent in the TV run.
Nagisa accepting Tomoya's confession there was a bit out of the blue there, answering rather lightly, as if Tomoya asked her for a pencil instead. The different take on Tomoya seeing Nagisa as his "fated one" rather than a friend he warmed up to worked out well though, since they actually made good use of the intermittent dream sequences.
The rest of the movie's plot was similar the the bare-bones of After Story I suppose, but the differences where there. The fact that it was all foreshadowed by the much darker nightmare sequences and rainy flash-forwards(? - for lack of a better word) made Tomoya's depression a whole lot more intense here.
The other difference, where everyone actually gathered regularly after graduating when Nagisa was here, also portrayed more powerfully how Nagisa was really his everything, as well as his underlying lack of self confidence.
I can't really put it into worlds, but the fact that Tomoyo and Sunohara visited while Tomoya was down also worked to the movie's advantage, possibly from a realism point of view. It makes me wonder why something like this didn't happen in the anime. (I also found out which scene a certain doujin of mine came from now. ). Tomoyo is hot, hands down!
The father being more proactive in helping his son stand was another plus. It's undeniable that his dad was stronger than he was, so thinking back, it kind of makes little sense that Tomoya had to end up helping his dad in the TV run, despite him having more friends (who never came) and support etc. I suppose the movie didn't degrade his dad to that low a level though.
The ending, however, was what did it for me. Happy reunion (I'm talking about with Ushio here, not the dream-waking) in the TV worked well, and I was quite happy with it, but the way the movie portrayed the whole thing said only one thing.
IMPACT
They literally dragged him out, set him up and forced a happy reunion all in one go. The best part of it all was Nagisa stayed (meaningfully) dead and the entire thing ended on a high note.
I guess fleshing out parts and all was necessary for After Story's TV run, and to movie would've been less enjoyable without it. The dragging of ep22 and the recap ep kind of killed it though. Winding down may have been the intention, but I'm glad I watched the movie when I did to see it all end with a "bang".
PS: "I'm Akio. I'm Sanae. Together we're Akio-Sanae!!...." That scene was so win

It’s been announced that the eighth and final DVD installment of the Clannad After Story anime will include a special episode that is an alternate world arc about Kyou Fujibayashi. The episode is titled, “Another World: Kyou Arc” and the DVD will be released in Japan on July 1st.
~Random Curiosity
After what we saw in Another World: Tomoyo Arc, it's hardly surprising I'm dying to see this one.
If it's not Isuzu-chan Mii~
Damn, beat me to it. I came here to post that.
Agreed, definitely looking forward to this now that my hopes for a rebound romance were destroyed by the dream sequence cop-out.
ooo this is gonna be good..hopefully

Alright! This should be good. I hope. Tomoyo special was kind of depressing, so I'm hoping this will be a bit different. Kyou didn't look like a character with any problems unlike the others, but plenty of willpower to shape Tomoya anew. At least she shouldn't be in a constant danger of dying suddenly like Nagisa...
Great news
I'm really looking forward to this one, kyou has always been one of my favorite characters
