Really it is so stupid. Even if this is his last year with the Chargers that is no reason to risk a career ending injury. The guy is only 24 years old and as Seau and Bruschi showed if you're good you can play linebacker for a very long time. This is Shawn Merriman we're talking about I'm sure that if he elects to have surgery now and sits the season out the Chargers will give him another shot some time. Even if they don't, like I said its Shawn Merriman there are plenty of other teams in the league who would love to have a Shawn Merriman.

I'm also wondering what makes him think he will be able to perform properly on essentially one good leg, that must be extremely painful and as the season goes on I just don't see him being any good. I'm hoping he is able to perform and nothing worse happens to him but really I think he is just asking for it. Really I'm still wondering why the Chargers are going to let him play, yeah sure they need him and if he can perform it'll be a big help to them but that is no reason to risk the guy's career. They're just making themselves look really bad IMO and if anything happens to him everyone will blame them and rightly so.
