the 49ers are terrible because they let Nolan have so much power over their personnel decisions. A coach acting like a GM is generally a bad idea. He's the reason for the Alex Smith debacle (which, granted, could have happened to everyone) and the team's current lack of talent.
Also, look at what the coaching change down in Saint Louis has done so far. Sure, it's only two games, but that's a team that looked like they'd never win a game for the first part of the year. And they did not just beat Dallas, they bitch slapped them.
Cinnci needs to do the same thing.
There was a pre-game coverage of the Buffalo Bills and Chargers game (before the power outage that made only about 1/3 of the game visible). The main guy in the NFL Network studio talked about San Diego for a minute and a half, then, as an apparent 'throw' to one of the other commentators, asked, "But what about Buffalo?" Instead of answering this question, the other commentator made a joke about one of the silly lines the guy had used in his hype of the Chargers and continued to talk about them. What's more, after about two seconds a highlight reel of Chargers stuff (with music) came on the screen to accompany his drivel. This suggested, to me, that even though they had the one guy ask "What about Buffalo?" at the halfway mark of their coverage on it, they never intended to actually talk about them at all, which, basically, is how the media has covered Buffalo since the end of the mid 90s. In the end, the third commentator spoke about Buffalo for about 30 seconds before the segment was over.
The game? Played without headsets, game clock, replay and broadcast. The result? A 23-14 Buffalo victory. Granted, you think San Diego plays a little sharper if they don't have to fly east and deal with the jet lag, but they didn't touch Trent Edwards all day, and that put their defensive backs in an impossible position.
The Lions are so bad it's terrible. The Cowboys are finally back down to earth and everyone's still talking about them. The Cardinals might be for real. The Titans and Giants are still, very quietly, the teams to beat. Injuries continue to mount around the league. The NFC South is more than respectable once again. The Broncos pass defense is the pits.
