Thread: Movie: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Movie is now coming out on the Summer of 2009:

Harry Potter's Next Trick? Moving Half-Blood's Arrival

Harry Potter may be the master of magic, but now, he's also the master of movie scheduling changes. Warner Brothers announced that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the next installment of the franchise, will open in Summer 2009, pushed back from the original November 2008 target.

The change, the studio said, was for reasons related to box office potential and the writers' strike. "We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release," Warner's president and CEO said in a statement. "Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers' strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films — changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of."

Before you try and make all this bad news disappear, there is a silver lining for Potter fans: Warner notes that Half-Blood's new opening date, now set for July 17, 2009, closes the gap between that film and the next installment — part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — which opens in 2010.

In regards to adapting from the book, the thing I was most displeased at was Sirius. He's meant to be a scruffy, but handsome guy according to the book, while they simply turned him out to be a madman in movie 3.

    ... the movie is out...

the only reason people aren't commenting on it was because it was awful... right?

well, hell, i at least thought it was awful. in fact, the only thing i liked was that they added some tension with Draco's character and him trying to master the Vanishing Cabinet magic. i did think some of the scenes with Pansy (or whatever Ron's annoying girlfriend was) were somewhat funny, but the rest of the romance? Standard Hollywood trash.

we lost a few scenes with Voldemort's backstory, and we got tons and tons of foreshadowing about Dumbledore dying (seriously, everyone knows it's happening. i can't think of a more reptitively wasteful thing than foreshadowing an event the entire audience knows is coming...) Of course, they couldn't even get the climax right, and the lackluster ending with everyone holding their wands like some U2 concert was about as stomach-turning as they get.

Part of the problem for me was they didn't really capture any of the evil of Voldemort in the flashbacks. The book had small bits and pieces showing his potential for evil, and although the one scene with him speaking to Slughorn was decent, there was never that shock that should come with seeing the Big Bad's backstory.

They also decided not to include the Order of the Phoenix in the battle at Hogwarts, which made that entire part seem even more disappointing.

This was a bad movie, all around. It's not just that it wasn't as good as the book. NONE of the movies are as good of the books, in my opinion. It was just a very bad film.

Humans are different from animals. We must die for a reason. Now is the time for us to regulate ourselves and reclaim our dignity. The one who holds endless potential and displays his strength and kindness to the world. Only mankind has God, a power that allows us to go above and beyond what we are now, a God that we call "possibility".

The critics say it's the best Potter movie yet, which isn't saying much since the others were lacking. They cut out too much from the books that make the story magical (speaking figuratively) and try to make up for it with special effects that seem tacked on.

I haven't seen any of the Potter movies since the 3rd one, doubt that will change, considering movies cost $6.50 even out of primetime. I think anyone would spend their time better re-reading the books instead of watching the movies.

Where the dreamer and his dream?

Does Hermione look cuter than ever or more average than ever? I always thought Ginny was cuter and more likable in the stories too.

Who exactly is getting compared? They're about the same age in the stories and as actresses. Ginny is only one grade younger than Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

Haha that was pretty good. It sounded like a Muppet or Sesame Street character narrating.

I still say the girl who plays Ginny is cuter, at 12 or 19.

Finally saw this and now I'm thinking the main reason it was well reviewed was because it felt , in comparison to the other Potter movies, like a big step away from summer blockbuster popcorn flick and towards film critic fapbait for the franchise. It lacked most of the blockbuster popcorn flick staples that are typically critic repellent and spent most of its time focused on interpersonal drama instead. In fact I think most of the movie just relied on people talking to each other about typical movie drama stuff and getting depressed and/or upset about it. There was no real final battle like most of the movies have had, there was only really one heavy action scene (which itself felt out of place), and the ending was pretty much completely in favor of the antagonists.

I find myself wondering if the book was also this boring as an effort to help 'darken' the series or if the film producers just decided to go fishing for critical acclaim instead of summer movie fan interest.

Nah, it does get consistently darker with each book ( and no i'm not saying that's a good thing )

I guess the climax of all the franchise's darkness is when Dubledore comes out of the closet on the last book?

Book 6 was amazing and continued the steady progression of adultness and maturity that characterized the series.

Please don't let the movies determine the Harry Potter story for you. Go read the books, preferably before you ever let the movies ruin the story and characters.

It didn't happen in the last book. Rowling said it in an interview.
