Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora

    First episode by Rumi:

This series is set in the same world as the 2003 anime Someday's Dreamers (Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto), which was a good slice-of-life anime. "Mahu Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto" translates to "Things that are Important to Magic Users".

I'll be waiting for the Anime-Kraze-Ureshii version, unless they take way too long.

Based on the Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~Natsu no Sora~ shounen manga by Yamada Norie and illustrated by Yoshizuki Kumichi, serialised in Shounen Ace in 2008.

The story is set in present day Tokyo. Much of the setting is based upon real areas, the more obvious ones being the Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower. The main backdrop of the series where they all reside is in Shimokitazawa, roughly 6 minutes west of Shibuya on the Keio Inokashira Line. In Tokyo is the Bureau of Magic, which employs Mage Labour for certain special requests by everyday people. However, the mages must only use their magic with special permission, and any unlicensed use results in a penalty.

It didn't look like a bad start. The background art took some getting used to, though. It looked like processed photographs or something. I have always hated the, fortunately rare, method of incorporating photographic material in anime and thus I wasn't too pleased by it. Although I'm not even 100% the art was from such a source. Maybe it was just extremely arduous art, and careful adjustment of contrast and hues.

The story looked at least as promising as in the older Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto series (relatively speaking). Maybe I sensed a bit different approach in this one as well. At least I hope so because there would be little virtue in watching something like this twice.

I actually really enjoyed the near photo-realism, though I'm not sure they are processed photographs (they probably are).

I enjoyed the episode, but maybe it was just me but it just felt like a Makoto Shinkai film.

I think this is a series I'll wait till all the episodes are out and watch in one go.

Seems to be a bit windy series what comes to subbing. Rumi dropped this after episode 4, and I'm not inclined to trust the one group somewhat keeping up to the raws. So, I suppose I'll wait for AnY-Conclave or Ani-Kraze-Ureshii to get ep 5 out (looks like AnY-Conclave will be the winner there as they are up to ep 4 already).
