Man I have some names in my classes this year.

My 6th period has about 6 black girls with really similar names and it's like learning Chinese. I've never been so confused while calling on a student. Shakeria, Shatavia, Sawanthia, Shawana, Shanaria, Deshavian...

And then there's the kid who's first name is Curly. His middle name is Joe. Curly Joe.

    Curly Joe.

<@Terra> he told me this, "man actually meeting terra is so fucking big", and he started crying. Then he bought me hot dogs

Call them by their surnames. It not only increases your professionalism, but it also allows better distinction between those names.

Alternatively, you can also give them nicknames based on what material possessions they own, how they act like, what subject they're good at, etc.. It's as simple as that.

That objectifies the students creating an alienation between them and yourself.

This may subsequently lead to a downfall in their academic performance in XanBcoo's class and will instigate endless complaining/bitching behind your back with their networks.

I think it's still better to call them by their surnames.

He should repeatedly suggest that they adopt Americanized names like Asians do. So instead of Chang-Hsieh, a Chinaman will go by Chuck or Cheston. So one of them could go by Sandy, another could be Samantha, another could be Sasha, another could be Sally.

For God will not permit that we shall know what is to come... those who by some sorcery or by some dream might come to pierce the veil that lies so darkly over all that is before them may serve by just that vision to cause that God should wrench the world from its heading and set it upon another course altogether and then where stands the sorcerer? Where the dreamer and his dream?

I'm against making up crazy or misspelt names for children for the sake of being euneek unique, but if they've been given names already then just use them. Calling them by surname is weird in Australia anyway, since nobody does it. Nicknamesbased on surnames tend to fly around a bit, but that's about it.

The first two things that came to my head were Maths-kid and Sandwich Boy.

It doesn't have to be Americanised, but a name that comes from the same cultural backgrounds as those that use the alphabet rather than a phonetic mashup that's supposedly sounds like your other name.

I disagree. If you live in America, you should speak the language and your kid's name should be American.

I officially got accepted a/an [prestigious] engineering program today.

Anything bad can happen and still won't ruin my day.

I'm happy for your achievement, but be careful with pronouncements like that. It's just asking the universe to punk you hard.

See, I don't live in America, so my comment was made more applicable to the western world overall.

Nice. I'm not sure if it made me smile, but I got an offer into Med school for next year. I guess it was more "it didn't let me down" rather than "it made me smile", since I'm not 100% sure I want to do it. My parents smiled though, so at least they're happy for now.

A million premeds would kill you for your position right now.

Go for it - you have absolutely nothing to lose!

Today at work these two chunky girls walk up and I'm dismissive and not that helpful and they don't look happy about it. Then when I do help them, I see the desktop image on their laptop and it's a buddy picture of the same two chunky girls. I couldn't help smiling while holding back laughter. Then a really sweet and cute girl comes up for help and I spend the last 30 mins of work chit-chatting with her and almost making a friend with an attractive female, but attractive in a way that I don't want to sex her, just hang out with her.

Had a depressing last couple of days. Felt shitty at work with stress and other feelings.

Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" never ceases to get an intense emotional reaction from me.

The Arcana Heat 3: Limited Edition that I ordered from zavvi.com arrived today. Having an actual disc rather than a download FTW!

A moderate storm hit this part of the country today and I went to the beach and surrounding areas to have a look. I did get pretty drenched despite having a full rain gear including rubber boots and also my camera was in danger, but it was truly awesome to watch the big waves hit the rocks. Just walking or biking against the gusts was a nice experience. Of course the return trip was very easy consequently. The wind driven rain drops were also funny because the force was such that it felt like somebody was throwing small pebbles at you. There were also some crazy bastards kitesurfing.

I like storms and they make me smile.

Best wake/memorial/reception/drunken-afterparty ever. Seriously. We gave him one hell of a send off.

    Place was packed.

It's nice that you guys are handling it well enough to host a send off party for him.

One of my best friends died soon after High School (3~ years ago) and it's still awkward for some of my other friends when he is brought up in conversation.
