Btw i'm a bit confused about certain things, i hope you guys can help me:

    - Is there actual combat in this game?

    - How many endings are there?

    - Does every different option lead to a different outcome, or does that only happen in certain key options throughout the game? For example, are there times where choosing one option or another will only change the next scene or will it change all the scenes from there after?

There is combat, but it is conveyed the same way you get from a light novel. Long, written descriptions, with the occasional background photo illustrating particular events from those sections...but with sound effects. So it's like reading a novel, but instead of you imagining the sound effects, the game will do it for you.

As for endings...are you counting the "Ending" endings, or the myriad of DEAD ENDs?

There are around 40 of the DEAD END type of endings divided among the three major arcs, called "Tiger Dojo" where you can get hints at the price of losing all of the character images you've gathered along the way. Sometimes they are a lot of fun to see the many ways Shirou can die. Many of them are pretty creative, though some are repeats under different cirumstances or times (he gets his neck snapped a lot).

As for actual endings, there is one for the Fate arc, two for the Unlimited Blade Works arc, and two for the Heavens Feel arc. You usually need to complete each of the "True" endings in order to try for the alternate endings.

You must complete the Fate arc before you can begin UBW, and you must complete UBW before you can start HF.

Lastly, many of the times, the major story line will continue, but you'll get different scenes depending on your choices. However, some of the arcs and choices you make will affect you way down the road. The third arc, Heavens Feel, has more of those than the other two. The conditions involved in getting the correct ending to HF are much more complicated than the other two arcs. Things you may or may not do on Day xx can prevent you from getting somewhere much further along. There are certain cases where failure to make the right choice will kill you right at at the end, just when you thought you had done everything right. Heavens Feel has a LOT more of these than the other two.

Dam that sounds hard and it looks like this game is quite long

You think it will be able to keep me interested for all that time?

I made a few edits and elaborated on the last question.

It can get slow at times, but you can save and come back to the game weeks later. But after a certain point you'll probably have gotten drawn in to a particular storyline.

...and you can always cheat with a flowchart if you're just interested in the story. It's just like any other visual novel, just more complicated. However, if you don't try to intentionally screw up, you'll miss out on a lot of interesting side info (tons of stuff for Ilya) and other interesting tidbits.

Heavy HF spoilers follow: After playing through the HF route, I don't like Sakura any more than I did before. She's below Rin and Saber for me. She has the same problem that most of the HF route itself had: things just flow along for her without that much personal ambition or aim. Of course she was quite a broken person to begin with but that doesn't change the fact. HF had a ton of info, more than Fate and UBW combined, but that was its only merit for me. Since I didn't feel motivated to get Sakura, it was hard at times to feel like pushing forward, especially with all the time-delayed traps Ryllharu mentioned.

One problem was the enemy. Avenger never was much of an enemy to begin with. No personality, no way to fight back. It's like trying to fight against a terminal cancer with a sword... Not much excitement. The scene that killed Gilgamesh, the ultimate badboy of the other two routes, was so anticlimactic it was almost funny. And Zouken... For Christ's sake. The geezer did absolutely nothing during the story aside from talking shit yet everything still went his way all the time. He even got killed as many times as Kenny in a season, and always the script writers thought it would be funny to bring him back a moment later.

It was also a disjointed route, and as opposed to Ryllharu's opinion, I think it was that because of the lack of meaningful fights. Lack of fights in a war (it was a Holy Grair War, mind you), isn't necessarily a good thing. It kept the other two routes focused and especially the UBW felt like there was no dull moment or a single respite. HF, however, sailed here and there, filled with Kotomine's endless speeches (even the game itself admitted that), and every single character's motivations, backgrounds, and aims were tangled and messed up.

Long story short, I didn't like HF that much. Especially after the strangling UBW. Oh, gotta admit the h-scenes were pretty intensive... It's a sin, though, the HF route contained the other, previously missing, Rin h-scene, and it wasn't that great.

I just finished the fate storyline and i have to say i never thought i would get so into the story.

It was fun to watch Shirou grow both as a magi and has a person.

I enjoyed seeing a main character that wasn't always full of pure win ( yeah i'm looking at you Goku ) or epic failure ( you know who i'm talking about.... naruto ) but went through the whole story not being a genius while managing some pretty surprising shit along the way.

I thought i could relate to him more that way, that and that both of us are Saber fanboys.

By the way when i asked if this game had hentai the correct answer would have been

    HELL YEAH !!

It kind of got me by surprise but it wasn't pure fanservice and in the end it helped to build the relationship between the 2 so thumbs up for that.

The one thing is that she dies, and i really can't be 100% behind a ending that doesn't make all my favorite characters live happily ever after no matter how good it is, it's just the kind of guy i am i guess.

Then again i have to say that her death and Shirou's life without her were dealt with pretty well so it was still a satisfying ending to me.

Well i'm off to the next storyline, wish me luck.

I know we have a fair amount of Melty Blood fans too, so I am wondering if anyone is planning to import the FSN fighting game, Fate/Unlimited Codes?

It will be released for PS2 on the Dec 18th, 2008. If you buy the special edition, apparently you get this too.

It looks like it has a lot of the characters from FSN, and a few from Fate/Hollow Ataraxia as well.

"Sakura is not a virgin, I have no use of a second-hand wife!" is what you should think about her!

Well I found UBW to be extremely overrated. It took me a lot longer to finish that arc than the others because I just got completely bored halfway through and stopped for months.

Unlike Saber and Rin, Sakura gets absolutely zero development in the other arcs. It's admittedly hard to feel any attachment towards her at all until HF. Rin gets a lot of development in all three arcs, while Saber gets a medium amount in all three. That's all because Sakura is an "outsider" from Shirou's point of view, and he doesn't want to get her involved.

Sounds like a very succesful mix of endings (girls) if people can completely disagree on which one is the best. For me it's certainly Rin>Saber>Sakura. Even during the Saber route I became more interested in Rin. Her h-scenes were easily the worst, though, and felt most detached from the plot. However, Shirou was the least annoying during her route, in my opinion, probably because it went deeper into the Shirou-Archer connection than the other two routes.

    I agree in every aspect

just that saber wins in my opinion because her arc was the saddest for me... I had tears in my eyes in both, the game and the anime at the end

Btw i've experienced something while playing the game, there are times when i can't read the text ( like when berserker screams, and instead just get like a blurr of text. When i go behind to reread it it's like i don't have the correct font on my pc.

Has anyone else experienced this b4?

I don't think you are supposed to be able to read the Berserker's screams. They are just incoherent growls. The man is insane, after all, and can't speak, true to his class.

But I could be wrong, of course.

They are supposed to be that way.

Because he is summoned as Berserker, Hercules is driven insane. It says it somewhere in the data sections. That's why he is only able to speak normally in the Fate arc after Saber, Rin, and Shirou have killed him.

Subbers used the same effect for the Curtain Raiser promo for the anime. I think it looks a lot better than [...................] or RAAAAGH!

Ya that are just berserkers screams... it coul be that it says *roaaaaaar* in kanji (like they do in the manga when someone makes a sound etc)

my guess is, that the translator was to "lazy" (which is understandable) to remove the kanji text and put some black bars on them...

I'm not sure about that though

edit: ok ryllharu's version sounds better

but there is nothing wrong with the game, that's for sure

To clarify, the Japanese version of the game is that way. There is no need to translate it, as it was never meant to be understood by anyone.

    Oh ok

One more question, seeing as i've only completed 1 of the routes it's kind of dangerous for me to lurk around this thread right?

Oh and when you get new info on the servants you get a "wiseup" right? Does that count for anything really?
