Yo, Ikepuska. Don't worry, we're all oddballs here. Let's hope you have some strong opinions, right? Have a nice day!

    Welcome.

I was wondering what is " Bioinformatics" exactly?

He's going to create a cybernetic Frakenstein.

And I bet I'm terribly misinformed.

Anyway, welcome to the forums Ikepuska, you of the Russian-sounding name!

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field, combining biology and information science. Included is stuff like ... computational techniques for biochemistry, statistical and mathematical models for protein folding, genetics, and so on and so forth.

It's pretty neat, but, at least here it's a pretty damned challenging program because of the different threads that you have to pull together, and because it's an emerging field.

(my university offers one bioinformatics class at the undergrad level, co-offered as biology, stat and computer science, all of them are senior-level ... I dropped the class after a week, because I couldn't cram advanced bio and stat into my brain fast enough to make sense of the coursework).

a welcome to all the other new guys as well. lurking is just not as fun. so go out there and post post post!

Humans are different from animals. We must die for a reason. Now is the time for us to regulate ourselves and reclaim our dignity. The one who holds endless potential and displays his strength and kindness to the world. Only mankind has God, a power that allows us to go above and beyond what we are now, a God that we call "possibility".

Thanks for the definition of Bioinformatics WD and Complich. It sounds really interesting. Lucky you Ikepuska!

That's pretty much what it is, it's primary applications are in genetic engineering and analysis and prediction of allele interactions (In CS terms genes are variables, and and the alleles would be the specific values that the variable can have.)
As an example we know where the genes are but a) we don't know what all the alleles are or what they mean. So we don't always know what allele would produce what hair color though we know where that data is stored. b) more importantly we don't know how combinations of alleles work together, e.g. what the significance/side effects are of having black hair, and blue eyes, and pale skin, as opposed to having green eyes instead.
The alleles don't exist in total isolation they interact with each other, so analyzing what the concequences of a particular set of alleles are is extremely important, and very very difficult.
Forget trying to predict yet, we just aren't sophisticated enough in our understanding. My ultimate goal is to get a law degree and work at the international level for patents and ip for this discipline because it's badly in need of trained attorneys, and also because the long term potential of the field is frightening and it's gonna be with how patents are phrased and the legal profession as a whole where the lines are gonna be drawn. (For classic movie buffs I'm worried about Gattica)

Most schools treat it as a subset of the medical discipline, and require either molecular biology(or some variant) or CompSci with a heavy algorithm and analysis/modeling component for the undergraduate work. Yeah, my undergrad school offered exactly one CS based bioinformatics course, I think that the discipline cannot be taken as a degree program at the undergrad level anywhere.

Oh, and by the by I'm a he ^_^; although I suppose the avatar might be misleading. I just like Ah! Megami-sama a great deal, since it's one of the few romance based series I actually thoroughly enjoy. It feels like a nice healthy stable relationship, without the complications most series insist on adding.
I can't really stand all the conflicts, jealousy and/or inappropriate behavior of most, especially shojo. Inappropriate as being defined here as cheating, two-timing, falling for someone else while in a relationship without ending it, and the tendency for relationships between a minor and non-minors, if they have a genuine feeling, then they can damn well wait for the minor to grow up a bit, twenty at least, before becoming intimate. My absolute greatest dislike is if rape is involved, I loathe rape with a burning passion-My opinion is castration for the first offense-and the feelings of powerlessness and anger I get when it happens to characters just isn't worth it, especially when it warps them making them into a negative female character. ^_^; Well that's my little rant on what I dislike about shojo.

...PS: And here I just said I don't post much... hehe Ah well, and if this post was too long/too off topic I'll be glad to edit it. It's my major after all, and well I have strong opinions on the latter topic.(Oh and it's Albanian no relation to any Slavic language, especially since the e should have an umlaut)
