Purpose of hard drives for 360 and ps3?

Umm... I'm going to get a ps3 soon, and I was wondering what are the hard drives used for besides saving games? Also how big does a saved game even take up?

I mean... Is 20gb not going to be enough that I'd want a 60gb one?

Honestly unless you're gonna use the PS3 for a lot of music or movies I don't really see a need for more that 20 gigs. The only thing else it's used for would be demos, game trailers, or a few PS1 games which you could buy. As for game saves it only takes a few megs like 4 or 5 tops

From what Wikipedia says, you can download a lot of stuff on PSN,
    Games made by independent studios.
    PS-One games.CD-ROM.
    Arcade games..
    Additional content
Demos, trailers, making-of, wallpapers, theme for XMB, etc..

(This was from the Wikipedia article on PSN in French, since the English page didn't have that information.. So excuse my poor translation)

But if you don't care about that, I suppose a smaller harddrive would still be fine.

HD-space os good I'f you're going to download special content for your games and demos and stuff. Many games have downloadable content now a days. For example Rock Band will get new songs roughly every week.

hdd space is for, downloads, save games, and most importantly caching.
Also since every ps3 comes with an hdd, some games have the ability to install themselfs on the hdd, so you can play the game with lower loading times, though you still require the disc to play.

I'd go with the 60 only because I heard a nasty rumor about the recent 20's, saying that the 20's cant play PS2 games. I have no idea if this is true or not thou. If someone can confirm or deny this, please do so.

For all you awesome people, it's just Phoenix. The numbers are just the amount of times people misspell it.

Yeah, that was suppose to lower the price.... By like $50-$100.

    Are the HDs upgradable?

ugh, will you ppl please not state stuff as if they were facts? cause the 20gb ps3 is 100% compatible with ps2 games, since it has the build in emotion engine similar to the 60gb NTSC ps3.
the 60gb pal ps3 and the 80gb ps3 ( all regions ) only have ps2 software emulation, cause they took out the emotion engine to cut costs, the 40gb ps3 has no ps2 support what so ever.

Which PS3's are still able to play PS2 games? (I am thinking of buying one and at the moment still prefer PS2 games over PS3)

Currently only the 80 GB one Joker. The 40 GB is pretty much a stripped down model; Sony did away with the backwards compatibility although it does play PS1 games.
This fantastic Sousuke sig was made by the one and only Lucifus! Thanks man!

By music and movies, you be storying them inside the PS3 harddrive?

No thanks, I have a computer for that stuff.

But I think the lowest model of the PS3 i 40gb now, and that is the $400 one. I think the 20gb has been discontinued or something.

Another question too, although the PS3 won't be backwards compatible, I could still use a ps2 -> ps3 controller converter right? Because I have an arcade stick for the PS2.
