Thread: Anime Recommendation and Suggestion Query

  1. #781
I've never bothered with the second series of Condor Hero... something about the Chinese they use irks me, especially when I loved the Japanese version. I'll just have to force myself to watch a couple of episodes and get used to it. Condor Hero, the first season, was my favorite series for a while.

I thought it was a nice adaptation. I watched it in Cantonese dub though, so no comments on weird Chinese . I missed the ending on of the second series on TV though, so I'll probably download it sometime.

Like DarkDragon said, the Hong Kong TV series does include a lot of detail the anime omitted, so I too recommend it for anyone wanting to know more (better yet, read the book if you can find it in a language you understand).

After checking out the Ergo Proxy OP in the music thread, I have to admit that my interest was piqued. Most of you know me pretty well, so is this an anime you think I'd enjoy? I can deal with a fair bit of obscurity and mystery in my anime, but ones like Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze were just too weird and abstract for me. I like to be able to connect with the characters and have the plot move in a definite direction, even if I'm not sure where it's going.

Ergo Proxy is a bit high on the weird and abstract side of things. I can admit I never actually got all the way through it, because I was expecting something more akin to Ghost in the Shell, with a Witch Hunter Robin twist to it, but it is definitely something "higher-minded" and a lot more esoteric.

It still sits on a dvd, waiting to be brought back to my hard drives and watched.

Just watch it. Don't be a sissy. Just pretend it's a romance anime with some cool animation and action, and you'll get through it easily enough.

[Forgot this part of the post]

I'm not trying to dissuade you from watching it, it's a matter of personal taste.

I agree with Munsu, just watch it.

As for me, I'll finish it someday, everyone has a backlog.

You can watch the first 22 episodes of Ergo Proxy fairly smoothly without trying to work out all the kinks and twists. It's really the last episode that leaves you mind blown to pieces and working out who's who(minor spoiler)

After that, I could recommend you read the Ending Explanation I found back when I finished the series (attachted to my post). I slept soundly after reading that

Bill, you just saved my mind from thinking about Ergo Proxy.

Could someone give me any good tips for animes that have two people fighting against each other, always striving to becoming stronger. Something like Tenjou Tenge, except good, not crappy. Tenjou Tenge failed in all the critical aspects (in the anime at least, don't know about the manga), got stuck to only be about the past, they cut the brothers fighting, making it into some small thing, giving place for someone else to take the little brothers place as the one wanting to beat the older brother.

Basically a good fighting anime, if something with a brotherhood relationship exists, that would be awesome.

Don't know how accurate this list will be, but I'll try to find some animes that have action with some strong rivalries in some form or another. I'll start with s-CRY-ed, while I think of others and edit my post.

    Hajime no Ippo
    Mai-HiME
    Mai-Otome

    Naruto (lol)

If you like sports, well many, if not most, are focused on that principle... of rivals 'battling" each other.

Problem is that there really aren't that many Martial Arts anime out there, but I'll see what I can do. There's Grappler Baki, but that really doesn't fit the bill of what you're looking for. There's Shura no Toki which has various arcs, where the characters are pretty much already fully developed, but the martial art is quite good.

I'll tell you this, the final battle in s-CRY-ed is completely badass.

There's also Air Master, which doesn't really have that big rival, but the martial art and action is really good.

Shadow Skill is another one you should check out, though I don't remember much about the plot at the moment.

well, I don't remember it having a plot, so it's fine.
it could also work as a "wuss gets stronger" series, but the wuss is considerably strong when he starts, and instead of getting stronger, he gets more of a wuss.

sig made by Itachi-y2k5, thanks, dude!
Currently Watching: probably a show directed at 9 years old girls, lets be honest.

You know the important distinction between Batman and me? Batman is fictional. In real life, there isn't always an alternative.

I will to defer to Munsu for this, he knows these types of series better than I do, and he already got Scryed and AirMaster on there.

I would add an Ikkitousen on there (really doesn't matter which). The plot is crap, and the fanservice can border on excessive, but the fights are good.

How about any good martial arts series?

For Martial Arts off the top of my head.

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi: Action Comedy Its about Shirahama Kenichi who's nickname is weaklegs who joins a dojo to get stronger after meeting a girl. He spends his time at the dojo learning from 6 martial arts masters at once and it results in a lot of fights based on different and fighting disciplines. This one runs 50 episodes and is more in the teen category.

Tenjho Tenge: This one is really about creating the ultimate martial artist and as a warning the series has a bad tendency to do very "flashbacks" of events that you haven't seen before. The Manga is pretty hard to read because of this and the releases are pretty slow its also on the Mature side. The anime runs 24 episodes and 2 OVA's and lacks a ending.

Fist of the North Star: This has a lot of versions and I hesitate to call it Martial arts but thats what they claim they are doing. Basically the Main guy uses a martial arts technique based on pressure points to make people explode. The orignal is pretty old but it has a lot of variations in OVA's and other series so you might want to give it a shot. Warning if you watch the old series in the first 26 episodes there happens to be a abnormal amount of random filler some of which I hear is horrible I can't say I've seen it all at this point but after that it gets a lot better apparently.

Those are all I can think of atm I'd call martial arts instead of just random fighting.

1 and 2 seen, Kenichi was really fun and good although it had a crappy ending. Tenjou Tenge was good up until the fact that it SUCKED. The fighting was awesome, the anime had awesome potential, but they focused the anime on all the wrong parts and forgot all the important things. And so it just ended upp sucking.

Fist of the north star I have not seen, although from images and what I've heard about it, it's not something I would like.

All fair Fist of the North Star is basically just DBZ without dragged out battles.

As for Tenjou Tenge the issue isn't they focused on the wrong things its that it followed the manga and they left in the what 6-8 episodes of almost pointless flashback episodes.

Honestly with Martial arts stuff your better off ignoring it and watching more broadly themed fighting stuff. I didn't dare recommend Sumomomo Momomo which is just scary and strange.

As for a recommendation in the fighting area have you tried Hajime no Ippo? If you haven't its a boxing anime that focuses quite a bit on the fighting and training aspects of becoming a boxer. If you have then we are getting a new series for it in January so that may cover you.

I remember Shadow Skill being very good. The OVA especially.

Shigurui if you don't mind excessive gore, some nudity, and homosexual references. But the show is definitely what your looking for -- two men aiming to get stronger. Basilisk can be fun if your up for fantasy ninja powers and a little Romeo & Juliet.

If your interested in manga read Vagabond. The artwork is top notch. He does a great job at showing movement on paper.
