Because after some thinking, it's the most "adventureous" period:

I like a story set in Europe for the familarity. Medieval is too brutal. Post-Industrial times are too boring. And the French revolution is a moment in history that both has the glamour of royalty, the bravery of heroes, and the will of the people to change their own future. It kinda all comes together in a very appealing way, imo.

Basically I want good anime set in Renaissance France/Europe or Colonial USA. Post-medieval times but before WW2. IMPORTANT: No shitty over-the-top stories, but grounded, kinda realistic stories, portraying the everyday life of people.

Stories that kinda fit the bill that I already watched:

    - Les Miserables
    - Emma
    - Lady Oscar: Rose of Versailles
    - Georgie
    - Ra Senu no Hoshi/Nadine Star of the Seine

If there's anything involving the French revolution, the rebellion and such, that's what I'd like to see. Musketeer stuff is okay, too.
    - Le Chevalier D`Eon: I legit fell asleep trying to watch this and eventually dropped it. The setting is more of a theme, but it's basically what you're asking for. Caveat it with there is both more and way less fantasy jammed in here than you expect, if that makes sense. But a lot of other people really like it. It's also not slice of life, but yet very methodical and slow.

    - Ikoku Meiro no Croisee - Time period is off (or at least the tail end of the period you want), but this is the flavor of what you want.

Think you literally watched everything else that exists already unless you want to find anime Anne of Green Gables.

They don't make anime of this stuff, you'll have to start reading shoujo and josei manga and bridge into the Victorian Era. You'll have to accept that the very specific era and setting you want has maybe 11 manga titles total. Honestly, you're in the wrong medium for this stuff.

Honestly, if you know MOVIES (not anime) that fit the criteria, feel free to mention a couple. One of my favorite movies is "Man in the Iron Mask" with Leonardo DiCaprio. Also "The Patriot" with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger.

I had actually wanted to rewatch Anne from Green Gables for the longest time, though. Watched it as a child on TV, but can't remember anything (although the story is kinda known anyway).

    EDIT:

omg, started watching Ikoku Meiro no Croisee. I'm not sure my heart can take this. Why would parents send their cute little daughter to the other side of the world?

Finished Ikoku Meiro no Croisee today. It was nice, but the stationary nature of the story made it rather "small" and less adventurous. Also I assume the manga goes much further, because the story just ended like BAMM.

I just watched episode 44 of my rewatch of "A Dog from Flanders"/Furandasu no Inu/Niklaas, ein Junge aus Flandern.

Cried 3 times during that one episode. Fucking crushed me They wouldn't be allowed to show this 1975 anime on German television nowadays, kids of today are not prepared for that. Still such a great anime that holds up nicely and works both for children (teaching lots of things) and adults (having the feeling of regional movie that depicts the time and place well). I never saw the complete series when I was a child, so I'm curious to see the last couple episodes.

Next anime I'll finally watch to completion will be "Anne from Green Gables".

    Edit:

    OH MY FUCKING GOD

I just watched the final episode of "A Dog from Flanders" and the German Dub COMPLETELY changes what actually happens, so crass that, despite the sad events, it made me laugh

So the boy and his dog are seen dying inside the church from freezing to death. The German dub, however, narrates "And while the boy was still dreaming of angels and flying towards the sky, he would later be found by his friends and they'd celebrate Christmas. He then went on to becoming a famous artist and lived happily together with Anneka and her family." The End.

Wow. And I was wondering how this series could be aired on German television 30 years ago. Turns out the solution was by changing the ending entirely lol.

ok, I need a recommendation but I doubt something exists:

Is there a GOOD and SERIOUS story out there where the heroes are adults and fight children/teenagers who are the villains?

I'm a bit sick of shitty children being treated like heroes (see current Gundam or Persona 5 Royal) and adults being treated like villains, so I'd like to see a role reversal for once.

    Sure.

    Grave of the Fireflies
A handful of arcs of Black Lagoon
    Death Note
unanimated arcs of GTO (though Onizuka is mentally a child, so that might not count)

Eh, if those are the only ones, that speaks more for "it doesn't exist"

    - Hotaru is "WW2 against 2 children trying to survive"
    - Death Note's hero is Light, a teenager
    - GTO is comedy
    - "a handful of arcs of Black Lagoon", so more sidestories then

Is there really nothing where a group of adults is put in a situation where they have to save the world and the villains are children/teenagers? I would have expected to be a couple of series to exist.

    - At its core, there's the hubris of Seita. How you view it is up to you. On the surface, people don't blame Seita for what happens to them, but that's certainly not the complete take on the film.
    - Light is the villain of Death Note, very obviously. He's often described as an anti-hero, and it isn't often we get story with a POV of the villain rather than its heroes.

No. You're looking at the wrong medium. There's a reason the overwhelming majority of anime is shonen, seinen, and shoujo demographics. Manga is broader, but you're still not going to find it there.

If you want "anti-youth" media, there's only two demographics that feature it in the film genre.

    Not on an anime forum.

Try your request on reddit and come back with the results, maybe the crowdsourced answer can give you something worthwhile in niche manga titles or some obscure 1980s OVA.

Ok, I have no idea what's so taboo to be mentioned on this forum that isn't even questionable porn. But ok.

If it's not anime, or even manga, this isn't really the place to discuss it. Adults correcting the behavior of unruly teenagers sounds like "educational" films from the past.

I started watching Rent a Girlfriend, but I need to ask something: Will they keep teasing the fake relationship for all the season (and 2nd season) or are they gonna become a real couple at the end of season 1? If not, I'll drop it, because I hate nothing more than eternal teasing.

Season 1 ends at chapter 50. There are 284 released manga chapters.

    Spoilers:

They are still not together, and neither of them thinks she even truly likes him.
