Everything on that list has a decent plot with the exception of Ranma 1/2 which i meant to be episodic comedy anyway.

You could also avoid Ai Yori Aoishi since the story is pretty standard harem fare. I personally think it's a pretty decent series despite being generic.

Nagasarete Airantou is probably another one to avoid since it's a pretty similar style to stuff like Ranma and To Love Ru.

Lol the guy from Shuffle! is indeed pretty awesome

I'm also trying Vandread and Maburaho as will let you know what i think in the future

How about something full of action to counter all this romance streak i've been on lately? Can anyone suggest something fairly recent and Dragon Ball - like?

If you watch Chrome Shelled Regios, you get both, a harem with quite a bit of action and an actual plot. It kind of has an inconclusive ending though, but it makes a second season possible.

There is also Kaze no Stigma. Lots of magic powers and action, a bad ass main character and a fairly decent plot.

I actually don't want to recommend anything Dragonball-like since I really don't like that show, but Blue Dragon has the same art, and is very action oriented.

I'll try Kaze no Stigma but i think i'll pass on Blue Dragon, the ratings for it on Anidb are pretty low...

Kaze no Stigma's story is somewhat negligible, but it has one of the best male main characters. Especially in combination with the tsundere love interest girl (the other main character). This dude kicks so much ass and is so powerful that the tsundere has zero chances to display the typical violence in the tsuntsun mode and is thus constantly frustrated.

I like the series a lot because of this very thing.

    Serious romance animes...

    Highly recommended:

    Bokura ga Ita
    Itazura na Kiss
    NANA (several relationships)

    Ai Baby (the Kokoro parts)
    Ef memories/melodies
Futari Ecchi (the OVAs are mostly about sex, not going to lie, but at the same time it's about newlyweds learning to compromise and support each other) (edit: on second thought this one is probably not appropriate for the question asked)
Paradise Kiss (more of a tryst, but it is another mature relationship)
Suzuka (say what you want about the main character, but it is a romance series)
    True Tears

Be sure to watch Kimi no Todoke this season.

Kare Kano, but it happens in a high school (which is okay, because it's pretty realistic)

Except the anime isn't that great. The cast is wonderful, the story is good...and they forget who the main characters are and the entire second half of the series ignores them and covers the arcs of the secondary characters. A full half of the story remained unfinished.

21 total manga volumes, and the anime cuts off early in volume 7. It is a great supplement to the manga, but as a stand alone it is not that great.

Can you be a little more specific? The vast majority of the series listed in this thread fit either of those descriptions.

I'm thinking of watching Darker than Black so i can follow the current second season, but the first couple of episodes had a real "Black Lagoon" feel to them and i found that anime depressing as hell. Should i keep watching or was my first assessment correct?

Nah, you should definitely watch it. Darker than Black, in my opinion, doesn't really contain elements that would likely make people detest it. It's not all sunshine for sure but I doubt you'd require that from a seinen series anyway. Black Lagoon is like a criminal A-Team on steroids but Darker than Black aims for a more subdued atmosphere. People die in it, but that's only a good thing.

For me, Black Lagoon died with the awesome murderous incest twins

Well that and the fact that i was expecting something of a realistic look on the underground world and then found myself in this weird universe of super women with guns

At least DtB is honest about the fact that the heros are super humans and the whole mystery surrounding them keeps me going for the next episode

Black Lagoon was meant to be inspired by John Woo style movies. Over the top is just that series' stock-in-trade.

The twins don't even hold a candle to the current arc in the manga.

DtB is very episodic until the latter half of the series, so keep that in mind too.

    Hm, question:

I watched Night Head long time ago, but only until ep 10 or such. It somehow didnt get anywhere and thus became boring to me.
Would be great if someone who watched the whole thing could say if the series overall is great or not so great.

Personally, i loved the more realistic supernatural-powers approach (in contrast to Darker than Black, which i didnt like because of that).

    thanks

    If it's not Isuzu-chan Mii~

Sorry for the late response. I would not have imagined Ryll would pass up the chance to reply to you so I decided to refrain from doing so. The manga is better, since you can breeze your way through the draggy parts. There is an episode in the anime that only takes up 3 seconds or so of actual game time, so that should be indicative of how slow and dragging it can get.

I have a cousin (who really exists and isn't me) who loves yuri anime. Unfortunately, I have already given her a lot of yuri stuff, including the following:

    All Maria sama seasons
    Strawberry Panic
    Kannazuki no Miko
    Kasimasi
    Aoi Hana
    Kanamemo?
    Maria Holic?

Can anyone recommend something with yuri (and has finished airing even if it isn't predominantly yuri)? I am thinking about Uta Kata, but I don't remember enough of it to be sure of it actually had Yuri.
