I like how he already has an ending, it's just getting upto that point which is making the story. Also Hawkeyes isn't one of the four apparently.

Hawkeye is a shichibukai(sp). It's unclear why he did become one considering most of the greatest pirates don't. I can't imagine Shanks or Whitebeard bowing down and taking orders from the marines which is why it's questionable why Hawkeyes would since he also seems like one with no cares for establishment or rules.

So so far we know Shanks and Whitebeard, but what I don't understand is why do they compare all of them to Whitebeard. They said the four emperors are the ones with power equal to Whitebeard, but I don't see why they'd compare the group to someone in the group... the only reason I can think of is that Whitebeard is the most famous.

I am sure someone in the manga or anime said that, in this era he is as close as you can get to a pirate king. The only thing he doesn’t have is the “one piece”.

Buggy said that Whitebeard was capable of fighting equally with Gol D. Roger, he also said "Today, he is without a doubt the strongest pirate in the world!" and "The one person who is closest to obtaining the greatest treasure ever, One Piece!" on episode 145 in the anime, but I can't recall which chapter in the manga he said this.

So if Luffy wants to be a pirate king then he will have to defeat Whitwbeard. I think Luffy also said that to Ace when they were in Arabista. He told him that he might have to kiss Ace’s ass too if he is one of Whitebeard gang.

One Piece has just jumped another level for me.

Though I reckon the next arc would be something silly at first, not something mindblowing as of yet. Concerning the pirate age. Theres still a few things needing to be wrapped up before they can go for another crazy adventure, Zoro still needs a new sword, maybe Dr. Begabanks would be involved. And Sogeking could use some sea-stone bullets or weapons.

I don't see OP as an anime/manga capable of a time skip. It seems every single adventure of the mugiwara must be shown, because Luffy and co. all kick it up a notch at each stops. These arcs are stepping stones for them to reach the top (one piece, pirate summit, whatever you want to call it). A time skip would require that basically nothing significant was done in that time, and Luffy never has an insignificant adventure.

Still, time does play an important part too. Oda has been going at it for nine whole years now and in One Piece, no more than two or three months have passed since they reached the Grand Line.

The last destination will be Raftel, or somewhere very close to it. No doubt about that. But unless Franky builds a ship with built in rockets in them it will be impossible for them to reach that area in such a short period of time. And we can't forget the Strawhat's dreams either. Nami's world map, Chopper finding a cure for all illnesses, Zoro beating Mihawk. Those thing couldn't possibly be done in less than a year.

So unless Oda plans to keep on Drawing One Piece until we reach our 50's. I don't see any other way for him to get to these points unless there is a time skip.
