After learning who the Grandfather is, we learn the father straight after, and he was the total badass that smoker did nothing against. Now we learn he is the biggest badass out there.
I'd agree with some of the other people here and say that Gol. D Roger is probably Luffy's uncle or something.
I can't believe how well this has been thought out, Oda would be one of the better mangakas out there for thinking about such details before hand.
It's not hate... it's just a very interesting direction to take that character to, after all that we've seen about him
