    (1) I believe "Abyssal one" is an external designator, much like "Claymore" -- it's not a different species. It's just some people who were really strong before, then they awakened and now they're also really strong. Sort of like the designation "Sannin" in Naruto.

    (2) Awakened beings -- even the weak ones -- are substantially stronger than any ordinary yoma. If you want to think in terms of Teresa and Clare and other claymores and their yoma, consider that while Clare is only what you're calling a quarter yoma, she's also a quarter teresa -- who was also way stronger than any yoma. If you consider her first near-awakening as a foray into tapping the power of Teresa and her yoma parts, then her subsequent experiences involved learning to better tap those constituents.

    (3) While you can compare things like "size of yoki" on a direct scale, fighting is a combination of a lot of factors. Clare would have been last on yoki, but she's proven time and again that last on yoki doesn't mean worst in a fight.

Yep, Abyssal Ones, the term at least, is an external designator. But what it does is imply a certain level of power, separating them from other ABs despite being technically of the same species. Still, any claymore who is really powerful (like number 1 Teresa) is bound to become one.

I agree with your second point, which is precisely the basis for the idea of Teresa as the mutation trigger of Clare.

On the third point, I agree about the fighting issue, but the size of youki is also very important, since usually, the ones with the largest youki are the strongest (not necessarily most effective ie. Clare), and I would think that the AB that would emerge from such claymores are also more powerful (since flash sword etc. probably wont be of much use when you do awaken, considering you might have millions of tentacles or something)

It is now clear that a Claymore can completly awaken and fight without going crazy and starts eating humans.
The question is ... is Clare's awakened form sexy ?

Well, Jeane's awakening was quite aesthetic for those who like fantasy beings.
Priscilla isn't too bad either, even if her form is more evilish than Jeanne's one seemed.

Other awaken beings ranged from very ugly, to quite nice like Rigardo (well more like the image associated with lions)

I guess for Clare they can't choose something too insect like (except beautiful butterflies, like Jeanne...) or too ugly...

    I'm not so sure...
    Why?
Because basically no human alive can say they saw an Abyssal One... Because they wouldn't be alive anymore...

The external designators as of yet are Claymore and Voracious Eaters, if I remember well.

As I understood things, Abyssal One is a term used by the Organisation and the Claymores themselves.

But maybe the Organisation created this designator for the so few Claymores, to hide another truth...

I think they meant external to the creatures it's being used on. The Abyssal Ones aren't part of the Organization, and it was the Organization that started calling them that, probably because the all decided to go live in caves for some reason after they awakened. This does beg the question, why haven't the three been going on organ eating rampages all about the country side like Priscilla apparently was?

Fully intact mind. It doesnt have to be human (the mind) Even youmas can control themselves, much more ABs that were once humans.

That said, a man's gotta eat, and a yoma's gotta eat guts.

But Priscilla's rampage is probably sort of one of those "drunk with power" things, where after a while either she came down or was knocked down. Even the awakened being we saw in The Slashers arc was really pretty in-control. He didn't seem to be causing the local townsfolk big problems or anything, anyway...

But you're right. It's important to remember that from episode 1, the yoma were ... you know ... twisted evil things, but they were also intelligent, and spent a lot of time hiding in the eviscerated skins of their prior victims.

umm .... well ... Raki's clearly seen one or more abyssal ones and lived to tell the tale. Or ... perhaps not to tell the tale, since he didn't realize it.

The trick about the abyssals, and about most of the more intelligent awakened beings we've seen, is that they spend a good deal of time chilling out in a very human-ish form. They only seem to really bring out the insane power when they're on a rampage, in a fight, or just looking to show off. (case: we haven't seen Easley's awakened form, we haven't seen Priscilla's except for when she first awakened -- if you want to consider her one, we only saw Riful's after Clare successfully prodded her with her sword and dispelled the image of something approximately humanoid.

Further, if the abyssals are as powerful as they appear to be, and they were on such a rampage as they'd be capable of unleashing, they'd be a lot more widely known. As in, known by more than just an elite few top-tier claymores. I mean, not even all the claymores know the difference between yoma and awakened being (at least, Clare didn't seem to, and presumably she got the same basic training as everyone else). Seems like you only get a vague idea of what an awakened being is about the time you get assigned to your first AB-hunt.

In fact, most humans don't even seem to be too aware of the existence of yoma, unless their village happens to be getting eaten alive by one. This further underscores the point that you can potentially be living right next door to an awakened being, or someone's yoma-infested corpse, and not even know it.

(On a side note, you could probably build a case for at least a theme in this series being a metaphor for suburban social isolation? substitute whatever you want for "awakened being")

What I'm saying about "external designator" is just that ... ok, Claymores don't call themselves claymores. They don't call themselves anything -- that is, people who aren't claymores are the only ones to whom the term "claymore" actually comes into play. Awakened beings call each other and themselves awakened beings because they used to be claymores, who called awakened beings awakened beings. And in the case of Easley, he either calls claymores claymores as a convenient out-group designator now that he's no longer one, or he calls them claymores as a useful tag. But you don't hear him calling himself an abyssal one. Neither do you hear him talking about the others that way.

It also seems fairly arbitrary. Again, drawing the connection to Naruto's "sannin" ... there's no particular reason to call them the sannin, it's just an arbitrary handle that references some well-understood cultural point.

Understood, we do not call ourselves human beings in everyday life, because there's hardly
    ever a need to.

Regarding the fact humans wouldn't be alive after seeing an AO, I was thinking the rampage form.
As of yet Raki didn't see Easley or Priscilla in their monstruous form, he only witnessed Priscilla eating some guts. Any human other than Raki would have been killed I guess, so no witness again.

Priscilla DID sense Teresa's Yoki... Someone was saying that she didn't.

Looks like the appearance of Priscilla suppressed Clare. Thank god. I didn't want to see Raki run out and scream "CLAAARREEE!!"

2 more episodes to go. It looks like Priscilla was bleeding from her forehead in next episodes preview. Wonder how that happens.

Damn Raki. Until now I had been somehow tolerating him, but finally during this episode I thought: Just pick up the sword and kill yourself. But of course he didn't do that.

Things should get interesting from now on. Good thing they changed the location for the last fight.

Clare's yoki has the "flavor" of Teresa since it is her body inside Clare. Technically, it is Clare's Yoki, but Priscilla clearly has enough issues that she'd confuse it to the point of going berserk all over again.

The hardest part of watching the anime after reading to much of the manga is separating the two now that the plots have irrevocably diverged. If you can do that, it's actually not that bad. We got more detail on Priscilla's issues, a little insight that she very much feared Teresa, not so much angry with her as we thought.

But, worthless Raki development. At this point, he's really not much use other than yelling "Clare!" every 15 seconds. He should have stayed with Easley and at least learned something useful. He needs a new lieutenant now that Simba is dead.

Lastly, I'd like to point out that the second I saw where Galatea was pointing, I knew the last fight would be awesome. A freaking volcano! Rock music, battle to the death, in a volcano. It's hard to get more metal than that without vikings.

I feel they did a bad job personifying Raki, the anime makers that is. Raki tried throwing his life away many times, but just in front of Clare's awakening he squabbles into a fetal position and starts crying?

Having read the manga, I honestly don't like the way this is turning out.

  19. #979
It's hard to be like Ryl and separate the manga from the anime at this point, especially since the anime is filled with even more stupid Raki and even more inexplicable happenings. I could believe the things that happened during the earlier almost awakenings; the yoki manipulation and the determination for the sake of protecting Raki, but this just stretches it too far. Clare goes from actively falling into the abyss of awakening right back to teetering over the edge like she was as she fought Rigardo. The first time with Raki she had to completely supress her power to regain control and she wasn't even as changed as she was this time. Yet she comes right back to herself from further beyond the limit just because she's angry at Priscilla?

First, How can she just regain full control but still stay in her suped up fighting mode? Second, while powerful, hate isn't the kind of emotion that generally lends itself to mental discipline and self-control, which it should be taking buckets of for Clare to maintain her humanity. Third, even Galatea thinks she's awakened (no one should be better equipped to tell), yet she's telling the team to go 'save' her.

I'm quite positive it's hate, but in this case, I think Clare's tunnel vision set on Priscilla is keeping her straight. She's only thinking of killing the creature who slaughtered her beloved onee-sama. A singular focus.

As for the rest of your questions, I just put them aside. "Volcano" is the only thing in my mind right now. Cliche? Definitely. Awesome? Totally.
