Irene probably didn't do it on purpose. It was hard enough for Clare to learn and use it as it was. Irene probably thought that if she had tried to use it under total control from the beginning, the threshold could have been too high and she might have given up.

Or Clare was simply too dumb to understand her teachings.

i thought Irene made it pretty clear that you needed to exert self-control in order for the Flash Sword technique to not awaken the rest of your body... and I felt that that was largely a mental thing...

I guess Clare was trying to say that she was surprised that Jeane could keep her mind human when her entire body had Awakened, and so now Clare can Awaken her arm entirely (without fear of that starting a chain reaction) and thus has a better flash sword tech.

    in short, what bud said...

edit - also, and more importantly:
Nipponsei - Claymore - Original Soundtrack

Humans are different from animals. We must die for a reason. Now is the time for us to regulate ourselves and reclaim our dignity. The one who holds endless potential and displays his strength and kindness to the world. Only mankind has God, a power that allows us to go above and beyond what we are now, a God that we call "possibility".

Oh man, thank you so much.

I also have to say, the whole lingo of "Awakened Beings" kinda makes me wonder about what the Organization's not telling us, especially considering how much better the Claymores are as a result, like they can see the code, and Jeane and Ophelia have revealed that you don't have to give into the hunger (at least not immediately). As with any good tool, misusing it causes destructive power, whereas using it correctly makes it, well, useful. Just look at the "Eat this root" scenario. Wouldn't it be a kick in the teeth if the yoma were actually the result of misusing some power that was originally good?

Yeah, Irene's told us how Clare wasn't suited for the Flash Sword because it needed unmoving mentality, whereas Clare always had a "flame in her heart" as she puts it, and seems to go lose that unmovingness (making up words here). I thought Clare always had her right arm awakened when she uses Flash Sword, because that's what the technique is all about. But your concentration will keep it from spreading up and around your entire body and awaken you completely. When Clare said "It never came across to me that the Flash Sword was controllable.", I got the feeling that she meant "I never knew you could control the trajectory of the swings, instead of letting it slash in a general direction." But anyhow, good that she can use it betting now. Don't think it's as fast as Irene's though. Just not quite there. I also want to see what Flora thinks of the Clare's Flash Sword.

Ep 18- "From my team, number 39 and 47 will probably be useless. I'll end this before he transforms into his monster form". Bet you she's so glad she's wrong.

Flora already saw her chop up the entire rooftop to save everyone. They already said that Flora is the fastest sword swinger in the annals.

    I wonder who's faster now?

Flora's speed likely relies a lot more on technique than Flash Sword. Instead of just throwing power into her arm and swinging her sword, she probably concentrates on every individual movement of her draw and uses her abilities to make the sword move as quickly and efficiently as possible. In a one swing match I'd bet on high speed with high focus over random high speed. However in a longer battle concentration will tend to waver, which for Flora would likely mean a slow down. However for flash sword lower concentration only means less control of the rest of your body, but it shouldn't affect speed. So in a pitched battle flash sword should eventually win.

Flora... since Clare's Flash Sword isn't anything new

i'd always go with the main character having the fastest speed... but Claymore seems to be breaking alot of rules about main characters being the best at everything when it really matters... I'd think Flora's Draw is faster than Clare's Flash Sword, but the Draw can't exactly be used in as many situations as the Flash Sword...

as for the origins of Yoma, I think it was the Organization's attempt to create super-strong soldiers backfiring on them and leaving them with a ton of these wondering beasts who kept turning more and more people into Yoma themselves.

The Yoma don't really appear like any mutant humans to me so I'd guess they are a part of the natural fauna of that world. Due to their demonic properties the organization just can use them for the hybrids. Of course there could be also something more spiritual behind those beasts, who knows.

yea... but the ABs are as different to Claymores than Yomas are to humans... maybe even more so.

I think Masa is right on that one, I was thinking the same. Eugenism or manipulations going haywire, out of control.

I had thought they went over this early on in the series.

It seemed clear to me that yoma came first, the Organization later. In Japanese, Youma - ghost or apparition. Youma are just average demon things that roam the earth. They've probably been around forever. They just...are. Rubel or someone explained along the lines that The Organization recognized that the only thing that could defeat youma was youma, so use their power against them by making youma-humans. The Claymores. Experiments led to their initial successes, that all failed in time, and then they settled on the female Claymores.

Who knows how they reproduce, or even where they come from. It's not important.

I'm not sure about this one. If the yoma's were the result of the failed creations of the organization, there would be no reason to create strong warriors if there were no yomas yet.

Why not? Maybe the organization had plans to conquer all the cities.

Maybe there's some other nation they wanted to go to war against.

I just finished watching through episode 18.. and since I marathoned it -- I am really itching for more.. I cannot wait to see how the series develops further. I haven't come up with any theories with on entities origins, but I'll chime in again when I have something to contribute.

I wonder why Rubel needed to use Raki to motivate Clare to head north. She wants to kill Priscilla who she knows is in the north already, so she was probably already heading there for that reason already.

That is because her first priority is finding Raki. She was disobeying orders from the Claymore community to reach this goal. Her feelings supersede revenge.

i hope she doesnt find him anytime soon, the show has gotten much better without hearing him whine "clare!" every other minute.
