Like others have mentioned, perhaps Kaien is under the influence of Aizen's bankai, or is repaying a debt for saving his life?
I do my killin' after breakfast.
Hollows don't have a memory of their past as a human or shinigami. So his soul got eaten by that hollow, turning him into a hollow. Then Aizen turned him into an Arranccar. With new names because he doesn't know the one he had as Shinigami.
Anyway that's what I think.
he doesn't have a broken mask though, or a mask at that. i feel like the long thing he took off is just a prop
Maybe he got a piece around his neck?
Or he might just be a Viazard and under Aizen's hypnosis.
Orihime's brother had his memories of his past as a human, why would that be any different now?Originally Posted by NeoCybercoin

I agree with you DS, however for the sake of argument it could be said that Orihime's brothers memories were a fluke, since he had just recently transformed and normally hollows lose their previous memories.
True, but as you said, for the sake of argument, Kaien is no weak normal human, i was under the impression he was a pretty strong shinigami ( being a VC and all), if the hollow side took him over, i think it would be more like, Ichigo and Ogichi, both existing, both the same person but driven by different intentions.
Like Ogichi said at one point, "i am you".
Perhaps Kaien lost to ..... ?EnKai? >_>, and Aizen used his shikai to control him.
Or something >_>.
edit:
Also, Kaien would count as a vaizard not an arrancar, so something must've happened for him to follow aizen now, since he doesn't have a hollow ( EnKai ) appearance.
