I was worried the whole episode was going to be boring flashbacks but the second half redeemed itself with some good fighting.
As expected, Ishida has managed to lose his powers again, which is good because it means the fillers haven't ruined any manga stuff now.
I would normally complain about replacing the opening vid with what is essentially a commercial for their new movie, but the movie footage is actually cooler than the regular opening vid.
Aye. I agree with DE: The second half saved this episode quite nicely. The first part was pretty useless, but irrelevant history lessons have been quite prominent during this arc, so in that sense it's hardly anything new.
Ishida was quite true to his character, and the fighting was surprisingly good considering how bad Ishida's condition already was. But apparently his weapon was quite effective in principle against Kariya. Ichigo's shikai blast should be something quite similar, an energy based attack, so maybe he should try to hit Kariya with it. At least it would deliver a bigger punch at once.
I don't usually watch openings more than once, but now I thought I had become demented, because I just couldn't remember seeing it before. Good thing DE saved me... I spotted one interesting thing among the other stuff:

Wow that movie footage looked excellent, Unlike the Naruto movies it seems like many more characters will be involved in the movie which is excellent. When is it supposed to come out?

As for the episode, the fighting was okay, but as usual Ishida showed how much of a sap he is by wasting his awesome giant arrow, shooting it into the air and not shooting it at the weakened Kariya. While this was clearly just a tool to facilitate the Kariya vs Ichigo (final?) battle it doesn't mesh with his character to waste an opportunity like that.

well i've seen the ep but like you all know the first half was not so trilling
second half was fun but not what i'd expect from ichida
he wanted revenge so why didnt he aim the energy at karia
wel as for the opening I REALLY WANT THAT MOVIE
I actually don't care for when they try to cram every character in the series into a movie. They did that in the last OVA and all it ends up doing is alot of really powerful characters, standing around doing nothing.Originally Posted by Yukimura

I'd like to solve the plot puzzle, Pat. (THIS IS SPECULATION)
Yoruichi's little half-sister, (evidenced by her eyes, hair, and facial structure) current heir to the families crazy untold secret treasures comes to the real world to find her long lost big sister and otherwise wreak Shihouin-style havoc on everyone on earth. (evidenced by her apparent hyper bubbly personality). Then some dudes come from who knows where come to steal her secrets since she's the only one who both knows and can be beated up to tell them since they couldn't find our beloved Yoruichi.

Pretty good episode, considering the doubts cast by last episode's preview. Animation was good by filler standards and there was good action. The Kariya vs Ishida fight was more entertaining than I'd imagined possible. The preview and Golden Cup were both great too.
The animation for the movie looks top-notch. I can't wait for this to come out.
Sounds like a very good theory, Yuki! I wouldn't mind if it was something like that.
A better theory for the movie would be that it follows anime convention, thusly:
Some energetic, carefree girl shows up at school, and the substitute shinigami crew take notice because of her enormous spirit energy. But beneath this bubbly, happy-go-lucky exterior is a dark past that she thought she had escaped from. Eventually, some badguys from her past (who've been searching everywhere for her because she holds the secrets to untold power) catch up and Ichigo and crew have to help their new friend, even though they aren't entirely sure of her intentions. There will be a love-triangle twist between Ichigo, Rukia, and the new girl.
I'll take a shot at the guessing
In Karakura Town, there has been a sudden outbreak of unidentifiable spirits called "blanks" (vacant souls) while in the skies of Soul Society, the real world has been reflected. A mysterious female shinigami called Senna has appeared before Ichigo and at the same time a man named Ganryu is leading a group called the "Dark Ones".

@Animeniax...that's an okay plot, but everything about it could be folded into mine. So the new plot is, Yoruichi's mysterious and evasive sister comes to Karakura town, gets in a love triangle with Ichigo and Rukia (even though Ichigo and Rukia don't have feelings for each other) and then some bad guys show up and want something that only she has (the Shihoin family secret) and beat her up. Ichigo goes Shounnen hero all up and down the bad guys, who then call in their boss, the boss summons more grunts, the 10 most popular people from SS come down and start mopping up all the grunts (along with Rukia who finally has her powers back) and everyone's happy. Ichigo fights the Big Bad, gets angsty, and then mannages to defeat him with the power of courage and friendship. The chick finds Yoruichi, gets told off and goes home.

I have to disagree about Ichigo and Rukia not having feelings for each other. They shared this moment when Ichigo was getting ready to leave SS and Rukia said she would stay. They may not admit it, but when this new girl enters Ichigo's life, I see Rukia getting jealous, even if she won't admit to herself that she has feelings for Ichigo. After all, they went through too much together not to have developed some kind of close feeling for the other. Kind of like Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock in Speed.

He has feelings for both Ichigo and Rukia.
Ichigo? I certainly hope not.
Well, Renji hasn't been my favorite character anyway, because I always view him as being an obstacle between Ichigo and Rukia. He has such a long history together with Rukia and they are both real Shinigami.
Well look at Renji as an protective older brother for Rukia, so don't hate him because he cares about his kid sister. I really disliked Byakuya during the SS arc because he chose to keep his promise to his dead parents instead of protecting his little sister.
I don't think there's a possibility of a romantic relationship between the Renji and Rukia. Ichigo and Rukia, however, are just denying their feelings right now, because this is a shounen anime, not a shoujo anime.
So as far as the movie, there could be a love triangle between Ichigo, Rukia, and the new girl.
