    Romeo x Juliet

So here it is, the Japanese anime adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Series should start at some point in 2007, I think early. It's a series done by GONZO, and they are usually pretty good, so hopefully this series will deliver even though I'm not a fan of the Romeo and Juliet story.

Count Paris, a young nobleman, talks to Capulet about marrying his fourteen-year-old daughter, Juliet. Capulet demurs, citing the girl`s tender age, and invites him to attract the attention of Juliet during a ball that the family is to hold that night. Meanwhile Juliet`s mother tries to persuade her young daughter to accept Paris` wooing during their coming ball. Juliet is not inspired by the idea of marrying Paris — in fact, she admits to not really having considered marriage at all. But, being a dutiful daughter, she accedes to her mother`s wishes. This scene also introduces Juliet`s nurse, the comic relief of the play, who recounts a bawdy anecdote about Juliet at great length and with much repetition.

In the meantime, Montague and his wife fret to their nephew Benvolio about their son Romeo, who has long been moping for reasons unknown to them. Benvolio promises Montague that he will try to determine the cause. Benvolio queries Romeo and finds that his melancholy has its roots in his unrequited love for a girl named Rosaline (an unseen character). Romeo is infatuated but laments that she will not "ope her lap to saint-seducing gold." Perhaps most frustrating to Romeo is the fact that Rosaline "will not be hit with Cupid`s arrow/ She hath Diane`s wit". In other words, it`s not that she finds Romeo himself objectionable, but that she has foresworn to marry at all (she has vowed not to fall in love, and to die a virgin). Benvolio tries to snap Romeo`s ruler, to no avail: despite the good-natured taunts of his fellows, including the witty nobleman Mercutio (who gives his well known Queen Mab speech), Romeo resolves to attend the masquerade at the Capulet house, relying on not being spotted in his costume, in the hopes of meeting up with Rosaline.

Romeo attends the ball as planned, but falls for Juliet as soon as he sees her and quickly forgets Rosaline. Juliet is instantly taken by Romeo, and the two youths proclaim their love for one another with their "love sonnet" in which Romeo compares himself to a pilgrim and Juliet to the saint which is the object of his pilgrimage.

Mmm, I can't wait for this. Basilisk kind of reminded me of this but with more of a focus on action then on drama. Glad were going to get the real thing =)

So far it's been pretty far from the play. It's more inspired by the play then adapted from it. It's been pretty good so far I think. Stuff happeens, hearts are turned around, but the leads stay hopeful throughout, with Romeo being a bit too cheery for my tastes, but he does work his ass off to try and make the world around him as nice as he says it can be. I'd say forget about the play as you watch it and just think of it as a story with some of the same charachter names and themes as the play but completely separate from it.

I don't even know why they bothered to base this on characters from the play. Aside from the names, the two are completely different. They could have used other character names and slightly adjusted the plot, and nobody in the world would be able to tell it's inspired by the Shakespearean play.

But then they wouldn't have gotten the audience of people hoping to see a faithful adaptation of the play. I doubt I'd have looked at this show if it was described exactly as it is in its summaries but with different character and place names and called something like Love & Duty.

EDIT: But I'm glad I did start watching it because it's an interesting show in it's own right and worth seeing.

Ok... with those details, that I was aware of, I wonder if I'll give it a try.

To me Romeo & Juliet is a bit of a myth. And I don't want anything to spoil it.

Geez, it's difficult to fight against curiosity though...

I need to catch up, but Shinsen dropped it because they received a C&D:

    Hopefully umai will continue it.

@David - Ive seen the whole thing, and this story is really different from the original. Only the names and the very basic premise is the same. This is definitely worth trying. I doubt it will ruin anything from Shakespeare for you.

Umai has officially dropped finally (It's kind of annoying that it took this long to let people
know, but whatever I really don't care that much since they did good work).

    Lukewarm consolation prize:
    Romeo x Juliet - 22 - [Shakespeare]

The Good: It's RxJ 22 with encoding that makes me suspicious about umai's 'drop'
The Bad: the subs seem to be ALL CAPS which is extremely irritating and made it unwatchable for me. I have mkvextracted the ass file but I can't figure out how to make them not all caps (the text is not in caps in the sub file from what I can tell). If anyone knows anything about ass files and how the all caps state can be altered please let us know.

EDIT: I got the subs changed to plain old Arial with normal capitalization. Near the top of the .ass file where it says Default, change Alberta to Arial (or another font of your choice and you're set). If anyone wants my edited .ass file just pm me.

Glad its being continued by someone and I do agree with the above post..kind of suspicious in terms of the format that it isn't Umai..seems likely it's them, with just a different name (which I don't mind) - always sucks when anime is pulled when it's close to the end.

Does anybody here have the site for shakespeare's site? i wana know if episode 23 has been released yet.

    Romeo x Juliet - 23 - [Shakespeare]

I'm pretty sure Shakespeare doesn't have a site since all the subbers of RxJ got C&D's. Just cruise anime torrent sites periodically and look for their releases.

Um, if you got the Shakespeare version, then there are subtitles. The only line they didnt show a subtitle for was when Romeo shouted out "Juliet!!!!!!" in the very beginning. Keep
    watching, the subtitles are there.

I don't want to say anything about it yet since I don't know how many people have seen the last episode but all I can say is that RxJ was a great series to watch. I enjoyed this show from beginning to end.
This fantastic Sousuke sig was made by the one and only Lucifus! Thanks man!

Romeo x Juliet - 24 - [Shakespeare] It definately has subs.

Another beautiful series gone. The final out come seemed a little weird, but they stuck to their vows "Together Forever" no matter what the cost (even if that cost would be the whole world they knew). I'm glad this got finished off. Props to Shakespeare and umai for bring it to us.
