I pray you are right. Thorfinn has got too rusty anyway, to allow a farmhand to sneak behind him and strike.

I don't think it had much to do with rust, but just got distracted since he didn't mean to throw the first punch. If he had readied himself to fight, it wouldn't have happened I think. He's in shape and seems to have his instincts and reflex still there. Just needs to be in the proper mind set.

Problem was that he wasn't going there as a "warrior", he wasn't intent in fighting... in fact, it was his fighting reflexes that got him in trouble in the first place. He had no intention of fighting, which is why he got suckered punch from the back. To me that just doesn't signify rust. Now, if he actually wanted to fight, and still found his body not responding like he wanted, his awareness of his surroundings not being there, then yeah... I would call that rust.

But to me, the lack of practice, for example, wasn't the cause of him being hit from behind. The cause was his mindset of not wanting to fight, I just say can't that it was due to rust. The only reason he got hit from behind was because his concern was trying to make his friend stop fighting. To me that's just not rust.

Then it must be a matter of difference of perspectives between us: I think of it in much simpler terms: Thorfinn of the past wouldn't have let some farmer hit him from behind like that in the middle of an obvious fight, no matter if it was a wanted fight or not. I didn't really delve into his character any deeper than that, trying to figure out his intentions - I only looked at the end result.

I agree, but I'll disagree with that in some respects. Being a pussy is running from a fight. Deciding not to kill your opponent after thoroughly kicking his ass does not make you a pussy. Scared to kill and deciding not to kill are two very different things.

I wouldn't call Vash the Stampede or Kenshin pussies. Orihime from Bleach, yes.

Considering the social and medical state of the medieval world, not killing and leaving the enemies crippled or badly enough wounded could be far more cruel. Add to that the fact a Viking believes dying as a warrior in battle grants a place in Valhalla while dying as a crippled beggar could lead to a worse fate...
