Dunno about the order of the 2nd season, but I personally loved the way they did the first season. The episode order was not simply random for the sake of being random. It was done intentionally to make the plot flow better, with the climax at the end. There is also the side effect of added mystery, but that was hardly the point.

If they can execute the 2nd season just as brilliantly, I couldn't care less if they jumbled the episodes or not.

Well this is going to be confusing. Not only did I chose to watch the eps in chronological order, but I didn't finish the first series!!

I'm very intrigued that they are deciding to add more episodes, however. I'm looking forward to 'starting over' as it were. So I guess they are going to inject even more events and happenings into the show, but keep all of the old episodes?

What's the status of this show? Glancing the treads to avoid spoilers, I'm getting that there's a 28ep remake of the original 14ep show soon, is that correct?

If so I'll sit back and enjoy the 28ep ride which I should have tried 2 years ago.

not a complete remake, it's a re-airing (hi def i believe) of the first 14 episodes, which will immediately flow into the new season's 14 episodes, to make a complete 28 episode airing.

at least, that's how I'm understanding it to be.

    and it's already started airing

Already started airing? The only other things I'm seeing are the Haruhi-chan shorts, which I'd probably watch AFTER I see this.

The date July 7? popped up somewhere a page back or so.

July 7 for the second season, but the 1st season reairing has already started a few weeks ago. Just download the 1st series and watch that, preferably in the original (jumbled) order.

An HD version of the first series would be very nice. I haven't seen any fansubs though.

edit: I found the first two episodes released by "Yuki". I'm going to download the first episode to check it out.

I just watched Yuki's first episode. They essentially took the subs from a.f.k's release from 3 years ago and re-timed it. For those who watched a.f.k's release when the original series aired, this is exactly the same.

About the episode... It's the second episode from the original series (1st episode in chronological order). I was disappointed that they didn't start with Adventures of Mikuru. It would be a shame if they air this in chronological order.

So, the episode contents its the same, only in HD, and they're airing it in chronological sequence now? From the responses of this thread, it seems the best thing to do would be to wait for all 14 HD episodes, provided they're the same as the original run, and reorganise them into the original airing order rather than chonological, to get the best "user experience".

I don't know if this is a problem with the source, or if Yuki's encoder is a dumbass, but the video is over-smoothened. There's some color bleeding around all the edges, making the picture look a bit fuzzy, but also sharp at the same time because it's 720p. It's hard to explain. It just looks weird.

Does it beat the original 704x400 material?

Definitely. It's much better than the original SD broadcast, but not as good as the typical HD material you see elsewhere. Maybe you wouldn't mind it too much. Those with untrained eyes don't really notice it, as my roommate couldn't see anything wrong with the video quality.

Regarding the "yellow aura" you mention, seems like it comes from the lighting.
Also, the sharpness doesn't seem as strong as it would be for your typical HD anime.
At least for the scenes I tried for ep1.

However, these scenes made me want to give another chance to that show.
The better image quality and episode order may eventually change my view.

I'll tell you once I'm finished, if I do not let it down before then.

I'm not talking about the "aura." I know that's from the intended lighting.

There's actually consistent edge bleeding from excessive smoothening if you look closely. Here's an example. This bleeding gives the overall image a sort of hazy look.

Yes I've seen that in the afternoon in EP2, quite strange, particularly true on maroon edges.
However the quality is quite higher, and I admitt that I enjoyed watching those 2 eps.

True, it's still leaps and bounds better than the SD version we got 3 years ago.

And a new episode finally airs.

    Bambo Leaf Rhapsody.

Link removed due to being a fake

I'll wait for Yuki's version to see this.

Wait....episode 8 is the new season? The first 7 episodes were the old ones? Wasn't there more, or did they combine them or something?

This is a new episode inserted in the re-airing of the first season. Go and get it guys, I know a lot of people have been waiting for this. I'm still stuck at work, so I have to suffer through a whole day of waiting knowing that new episode already exists.

The link I added before is gone from TokyoTosho. Dunno if it was fake.

But here I add the Mazui and Live-Evil&Dattebayo versions.

Still waiting for Yuki's HD one.

I can't be the only one that feels this way (who knows, maybe I am), but someone should at least admit it.

Surprisingly, now that it has arrived, I find myself realizing that I really don't care.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the show when it first aired. It was fun, quirky, ran out of chronological order (like the novels do) had some insider references to pop culture and other series, had a great cast, great animation at the time, etc.

But there have been a lot of series since 2006 out there that have surpassed it in their own individual ways. (1)
While none of these are all the things Haruhi was at the same time, it is very tough to view Haruhi as superior to them when they've done individually better what Haruhi did fine a few years ago. The hype coming from the Region 1 release blew the popularity of this series into the stratosphere, and it sort of soured the whole thing. The release was in chronological order (as it is re-airing now), all the self-righteous Say-NO-to-fansubs anime viewers went apeshit for it, the dub was a disappointment even after all the stunts they did on the internet (that's right Wendee Lee, you always sound like a late 20s woman or a 12 year old boy), and there were at least three different Region 1 release versions.

It is still worth watching if you've never seen it, but I really can't find any reason that I would compel me to watch it with the same enthusiasm I might have if this had come a lot sooner. It's frankly quite difficult to find a reason to care about the franchise anymore. I read the books not covered by the first anime back then...they were okay. Haruhi-chan was funny, but that was really all about Yuki and Ashakura-chan anyway.

    (1) - Lucky Star was a better otaku reference series, Higurashi and Higurashi Kai a better mix of comedy and suspense mystery, ARIA a better slice of life, Kannagi a more well-rounded school life series starring whim-driven, overbearing, selfish female lead, Bamboo Blade a better character-driven comedy, ef and the KEY series (Kanon/Clannad, by the same company no less) were better animated, and Shigofumi as an equally compelling comedy/drama/suspense series.

    For me anyway.
