after re-watching Fushigi Yuugi, I just noticed that Kakashi's character is very much similar to Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi.
1.) They both wear a mask
2.) Both highly skilled
3.) 3-syllable names with the first two syllables being the same [ "KA KA shi" and "CHI CHI ri" ]
4.) They both have masks underneath masks.
- (Kakashi: refer to the end of episode 101) (Chichiri: Refer to episode 9)
5.) They both have a mysterious past
I don't know about Fushigi Yuugi or Chichiri for that matter, but I do know:
1) Kakashi means scarecrow in Japanese.
2) The mask under mask thing was in the fillers and was meant as a joke.

I think these threads are only really viable when the characters being compared are from major series. It's not like it couldn't be true otherwise, but the idea of the thread is to probe stereotypes or sharing of ideas between series, perhaps. If one of the series isn't wellknown it kind of lessens the impact factor of the similarity ratio.
IF you guys have never herd of Fushigi Yugi than I sujest you watch it is one of the best anime out there

I'm pretty sure that was a joke. I doubt that it'd leave such a huge ass scar if he carved his eye out (which sounds painful).
I always pictured Kakashi was on a mission with a member of the Uchiha clan. The Uchiha fellow lost his life, Kakashi only his eye. So he took a replacement from the fallen companion. That seems like a plausible theory, and would explain the scar. And I think Kakashi would be badass enough to carve out a dead eye. Maybe he absolutely needed the sharingan to beat somebody back then.
