Rock Lee...is it arranged Japanese-style? or American style?

which is his first name? Rock? or Lee?

because everybody in the show's calling him Lee-san, or Lee-kun, but then shouldn't he be called "Lee Rock"?

Rock Lee

The japanese say their last name before their first name. Hence...
Uzumaki Naruto
Uchiha Sasuke
Hatake Kakashi
etc.

So Rock Lee's first name is Lee

Umm.... Ano..... Well, Rock Lee is how Japanese would address him. As for English.... haha, well, let's see what happens when the English eps finally reach that point, which isn't too far.

I have a feeling that Lee will introduce himself as Rock Lee in the English dubs as well. I'm going to crack up if he says, "I'm am the #1 Konoha Senpu! LEE ROCK!". HaHAhaHAHAHa!! If the producers do that, then I will loose the single last smallest ounce of respect I have left for English dubs.

But obviously his first name is Lee, I mean, who the hell names their kid Rock? I'm willing to bet that Lee made up that last name of his, since he doesn't have a mother or a father (Btw, WTF? The Anime still hasn't explained about Lee's childhood O_o).

Rock Lee

Little useless trivial fact:

Since Japanese has no character/pronounication for 'L', 'R' is always used as a replacement. So, even if Rock Lee is his written name, he is always pronounced as "Rokku Ri" in the anime.

lol that would be pretty funny / gay calling him "Lee Rock", but most likey they'll call him "Rock Lee" cause it just sounds stupid otherwise. Also a lot of people call there children "Rock" or "Rocky". Also they'll hopfully show Rock Lee's past soon .

I think I remember reading about this somewhere. No idea where, but this is what I remember:

The Naruto databooks or whatever the hell they are had the names in the English order (Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, etc.) AND had Rock Lee as is. Can't remember the exact terms used but I think it was that Lee's and Gai's names ARE in fact English style, regardless of the fact they're refered to as Lee and Gai.

I'm just reiterating something I remember, so don't shoot me down if it's wrong.

Well, there aren't really any styles to refering to the name. If anyone watches Bleach, they know that Rangiku (last name) Matsumoto (first name), is refered to as both Rangiku and Matsumoto, which occurs in the English language as well. So make what you want out of that.

Rock Lee

Lee's name is fucking Lee okay. So in the english subs, he's gonna be either called Lee Rock, or if you're lucky, maybe they won't even mention his last name.

But Lee Rock is the correct translation, no matter how stupid you think it sounds.

But that's okay, cause Rock Lee sounds pretty fucking stupid the first time you hear it too.

Rock Lee

Little useless trivial fact 2:

Rock Lee's name in the mandarin translated manga is "Lee Rock". This is due to the fact that Lee is a common Chinese surname, and that it sounds better that way in mandarin. Remember that Chinese and Japanese names are similar because the family name comes first. So, Lee's surname/family name is Lee in the mandarin manga.

Rock Lee

Well, I have a feeling that his name will remain Rock Lee in English. I would argue this based on the fact that 'Rock' to English speakers feels like an adjective placed in front of the name, something like 'Hurricane' Carter. So English speakers recognize Lee as being his actual name, but preferentially place 'Rock' before that rather than after.

When gai talks to him on a personal level he just calls him "lee"... The translators have to notice that.. please... =P

Um...everyone calls him Lee. All the time. The only time the Rock part is ever even mentioned is when he's being formally introduced.

EDIT: Oh I see, your referring to how Gai doesn't use some kind of suffix like when everyone else talks to him. I don't see how that's going to even enter into the translation anyway, I've never know any translators to bother to differentiate somehow when a character says -san or -kun etc. I'm not even sure how they would without adding lots of extra words.

This isn't too far off. Mite Gai and Rock Lee are special cases. Mite Gai is supposed to be a pun for "Mighty Guy" and Rock Lee is supposed to be evocative of the name "Bruce Lee". So if the translators want to stay in the spirit of the original, they should just bring the names over as they are.

Word.

I always just accepted as Rock Lee as a mockery/homage to Bruce Lee and on some levels a jest towards the American the culture.

Rock Lee in the manga as well as anime is not traditional in appearance and I just figured it would be a slight comment on American behavior compared to traditional Japanese.

Then again, all you linguistics buffs probably have an accurate stance on it.

As long as we're on the topic of Rock Lee, Ive been wondering something. Remember Sasuke's Lee Combo, or as somew translators refer to it as the Lion Combo? I thought the name of the combo was named after Lee, not a lion. So which one is it?
