They got away with it? What are you talking about, the episode ended with the blast, there's still time for them to get caught. Palmer and the muslim dude problably survived the blast, I wonder what will happen next.

About Logan, I don't know what to make of it yet. I wonder what he's really after. Also, I wonder what are the effects of Palmer signing that temp release for Logan and now being incapacitated, does that make Logan's release somewhat permanent or something? Also, the bible passage that he was reciting is probably something important, probably some code he's been using to communicate with the outside world.

And I just looked up the actress who plays Nadia, and how could've I not noticed that this chick was the one from Vegas Vacation. I just became a fan of her character.

i believe that they pulled it off; that's what happens when you have a crazy zealot on the inside like Reed. but i thought the assassination was rather sloppy. The bomb nearly got discovered in time and how Assad reacted (if anyone remembers...) makes any attempts to put the blame on him look suspicious.

i'm willing to bet Wayne Palmer isn't dead just yet. But what will happen is the VP will make a grab for "temporary" office, saying it's a time of crisis and the nation needs a leader and that Palmer can't do it (no matter how good or bad his condition is).

    Assad? I think he's gone...

Chloe and Nadia did OK in this episode. Morris is really starting to get on my nerves. He must be some kind of retard to bring the booze into CTU, especially after spitting it up and making a claim that he was clean.

Charles Logan is bad news. Anyone else find it weird that Jack didn't ask what the history between Logan and his dad is?

Don't think he needs to ask... The attempt on his live and the killing of Palmer where done by Longan and the company, so that's the history right there. That there's more to it? Probably, but that should be enough to see the connection between them.

I honestly think that Logan is after what Jack believes he is; redemption. No matter what way you look at it, Charles Logan is a weak person. As a president he couldn't make any decisions on his own and when he did make a choice, he couldn't stick by for the life him. He was always very unsure of himself. Even when it was discovered that he was behind everything, and not the Vice President, we later discover that it was Jack's brother pulling the strings all along. Logan was a puppet.

Look at him now. He's under house arrest and completely alone. He's had time to think about everything he's done and he deeply regrets it. He wants to be forgiven. Even in the last season he wasn't an evil person. Just misguided. He honestly thought that what Graem was telling him to do was for the better of the country.

He's weak. He's got nothing left. I can't see him having some kind of sinister self agenda.

    fuck, Assad's dead....
fuck, that VP Daniels guy has got to be in league with Reed and Carson (my friends try to convince me otherwise, but i just don't see it any other way. why else would he threaten Tom like that?)
fuck, that dumb bitch (buchannon's wife) took so damn long to get back in...
fuck, the VP's secretary is actually pretty cute.
fuck, Lennox does the right thing, but now he's going to puss out?
    fuck, Jack got caught.
fuck, we get a decent Russkie and he gets killed...

i was very frustrated throughout this episode...

Why were you frustrated? Jack Bauer is back to his old self, and that's all you need. Well, not really to his old self, the old Jack would've cut all of the dude's fingers, not just one.

don't get me wrong, i was glad that Jack was back to being a badass. I loved when he went to the door and shouted "I've taken the consul hostage at gun point!", and of course the cigar cutter. But I just knew somewhere deep down that it wouldn't end well. And it frustrated me that the Ruskies got in there so fast... I was also frustrated because the second he got in that standoff there was no way he'd get out of the consulate without someone at CTU violating international law and springing him.

And so I was pleasantly surprised when Buchannon recommended just that, but I don't see the VP acting on it...

no fear though, Jack will be out before you know it... just in time to leave the bar minimum on the clock for stopping the drone launch

It's the Chinese problem all over again, except this time CTU will intervene. I have no idea how this plays out in real life. Is a nation, X, allowed the violate the sovereignty of another country, Y, under a national crisis if Y has information on how to stop the crisis but is located on X's soil?

Embassies are considered to have "extraterritorial status", exemption from local jurisdiction (essentially making them an extension of the visiting nation's soverign territory). However, the host country is still responsible for defending them, as best they can.

Extraterritorality can also be applied to diplomats and their families while on a dipomatic mission (also called diplomatic immunity)

There is no legal precedent, as far as I know, for a host country violating extraterritorality in order to arrest a person who had committed a crime in that host country. There are three cases I've studied (one I did a major paper on), but they're not really matches with how CTU would try to arrest the Russian consulate

The U.S. once sent a strike team to arrest Panamanian dictator Noriega while he was hiding at an Official Embassy of the Holy See (which also enjoys extraterritorality status along with some U.N. buildings. However, the strike team was called back by President Bush Sr. because his earlier move to use the military to invade Panama had created quite a bit of anger in the international community. Instead the U.S. laid siege to the Vatican Embassy with psychological warfare, blasting loud music at the building for days. Bush stopped this tactic when he recieved an official complaint from the Vatican. Noriega eventually turned himself in.

The Iranian seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran is often considered a violation of extraterritorality, since the fledgling government was seen to approve of the attack, and made no move to defend the embassy, and therefore have violated international law.

In 1997 the Peruvian armed forces moved to retake the residence of the Japanese ambassador that had been captured by rebels. The operation was a success and was regarded as legitimate by most media channels and people, but the behavior of the Peruvian army once they had re-taken the building has since been called into question and is under investigation.

There's also an incident with U.S. forces entering the home of a Nicuaragan ambassador in Panama, but I don't know much about that one.

It's strange how quickly Lennox went from being the bad guy to being the good guy, and now kindof the bad guy again since he went through with lying to the ambassador. The vice president is so annoying he makes me want to bang my head against the wall. He has no scruples at all.

I also found it somewhat amusing that the Russian president essentially gave the US permission to kill their soldiers and citizens at the embassy.

Indeed, I was thinking "Damn, that Russian president has to be crazy. A lot of innocent soldiers are going to die for nothing". I would've thought that he would've insisted on CTU announcing that they were going to attack and that they are under orders of the Russian president and that they are free to lay down their weapons.

Was it just me or was ex-president Logan trying to get Martha to do something like that? It seemed like he was egging her on knowing that she's a lunatic and something was bound to happen. He kept pressing the situation. The only rationale that I can come up with is he has a plan to get himself out of house arrest.

Mike Doyle (Rick Schroeder) looks like he is going to be taking over Curtis' position. It seems like he's an alpha male so I expect him and Jack to butt heads during the rest of this season.

Charles's intentions were unclear, but I did not expect him to be stabbed. The Vice-President is an idiot. Telling the ambassador that the US will strike is a really bad way going about the situation. As always, there is a mole inside CTU. I don't even want to guess this time.

  17. #257
Wait, how did you gather that there was a mole in CTU? I don't remember it being alluded to during the episode.

It was in the next episode preview. Chole found their data being routed to the Russians or something.

    edit:

    here's the episode 14 preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfOMfzY9wio

I don't think they're going to put a mole in CTU. I think this is just a good hacking job, or maybe it has to do with when CTU gave control of their satellites or something to the terrorists in the first episode.

i thought it was horrible that they brought Martha Logan back and she snapped like that. i know the bitch has some problems, but i did not think she was that far gone. Logan deserves to die, but not like that.

that Doyle guy will be annoying. But Jack should just serve him his shit sideways and cold and go rogue like he always does. Who really has the right to try to command Jack Bauer? In fact, he should just become the goddamn president of the U.S. already. That would solve all the problems. I say his resume makes even Eisenhower's look lame.

Wayne Palmer may be portrayed by a subpar actor, but I'd take him back over that Daniels shithead in a moment. I hope Karen Hayes' coming back is fast and fierce. Tom Lennox reverted to eating his own feces once again, such a shame too, since he was beginning to look like he had a spine, or at least was trying to grow one.

The Russian president's move was almost too convienent. I don't think anyone could, in good conscience, have his own men killed like that. Would it really have taken so long for him to get on a megaphone (transmitting from Moscow) and order his men to stand down? So much needless death.

could have used some more Jack Bauer creeping and hiding in the consulate. he was particularly fierce this time, praying on a couple (girl as hostage = awesome) in a secluded room. i think that Russian guy (horrible friendly fire by those Russian soldiers btw) brought her down there so they could fool around, and Jack couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. I still think he'd have been found. I mean, an hour is a terribly long time to stay hidden from all those Ruskies.

edit - I don't watch episode previews precisely because they give away this kind of info... but, now that it's got my brain spinning, I can't but help remember that DOD or some protocol from some government jack-off restricted Nadia (hot Muslim chick!) and Milo bent some rules, gave her access on his credentials or something like that. If there is suspicion of a mole, and Doyle (or anyone) starts digging, I think both Milo and Nadia could be in a lot of trouble. I know this is in no way suggested, but I just have a heavy hunch that's what's going to happen.
