Maybe you just have to look at the lack of development, instead of development. Given the circumstances, it's hard for the characters in their given situations to actually "develop". You can't expect Mitsuki to just wake up and say "Oh cool I've been in a coma for 3 years. Screw Takayuki I'm eating some ribs."Originally posted by: Hotsuma
KGNE was a piece of shit. No, I'm not joking. It was just that bad. I felt nothing emotional about it, other than pure boredom at how miserably awful it was. I kept watching because people were ranting about how great it was, but sadly to no avail, as at the end, it STILL sucked. What really irked me about this anime was how flat and undeveloped the characters were. Most people felt sorry for Mitsuki for "all she did" I don't see it that way at all. All I felt was wanting to puke at how she was acting, despite her not being developed enough for. Takayuki is also the biggest moron in the series. Not because of what he did to Haruka/Mitsuki/whoever, but just because he literally did... nothing. And he still continued to wallow in self pity and angst.
Anime like KGNE is very character driven, and because they sucked so much in KGNE, it fails horribly. End of story,
In KGNEs dfense though, it's mountains better than Shuffle! which is the most recent (aside from FSN) translation from an H-game to anime.
In real life people don't really change that much. You are who you are for your whole life. The only thing that changes is how much you're willing to express yourself. It's what makes me like KGNE. Other animes tend to really center around character development and have the characters go through multiple epiphanies in a matter of weeks. That doesn't happen in real life. KGNE is a much more accurate portrayal of reality, and if you feel there's not enough reality in real life, then...join the hippies.
So, you're saying reality is to blame for the shitty execution of the anime? Don't get me wrong -- I loved that they went for the realistic feel and mature storytelling. The problem is... It just wasn't done well. No matter how you look at it, KGNE is a soap opera, through and through. Everything you see happening here... happens in real soaps. However, soap operas are based entirely around its characters. In order for one to really enjoy it, they must be able to feel for the characters. However, at least for me, there was no sense of empathy or even sympathy towards the characters (except Haruka, for obvious reasons). Every character felt unrealistically flat and just didn't appeal to me. Everything they did was completely irrational, EVEN for a soap-type show. A little common sense and consideration would go such a long way in this show, but they don't even utilize that. It's a garbage show, "realistic" or not.
And yes, there should be development in characters. That's what makes anime interesting. To see a character slowly develop into what they are. And in KGNE, between Mitsuki and Takayuki, there was sadly a lack of.
