Lee is not a genious just because he has a special ability like being able to open up the gates. That does not make him a genious ninja. He's a crap ninja, who works hard as hell, and has a trump card (or two). That is not a "genious".

To say that Lee is not a genious is not dissing him. It's fact. He's my favorite character because he rules even though he's not naturally gifted.

His unbelievable talent through hard work shines much brighter and holds much more value than the lack luster presentations of a proclaimed genius like Sasuke.
I do not think Rock Lee is a genius, either. Saying such does not steal any of this proverbial thunder, though.
In addition, Kakashi questioned his possible genius status out of pure amazement and bewilderment over what Rock Lee was doing. No one expected that. I am sure the Hokage was surprised that a Genin was capable of going so far, too.

I think that if you can exceed your own potenial you should be considered a genious.
And does the meaning of "genious" only apply to those who are gifted with talent?
Then shouldn't you consider if not it's a great talent to be able to exceed your potenial, not only to be borned, in this case, gifted in certaint areas of Ninja skills?

I was taught the definition of genius is to exceptionally excel the normal. In my opinion he did.
He wasn't able to use ninjustu and still managed to become a skilled ninja without any 'ninja talent'. He surpassed borders that not everyone can.
it's just what you think by genius. if you think it's skills without working much for it, okay then. but I think genius means more than just that.
