I've waited so long for the DVD to come out..... I love Hamasaki Ayumi's "Heaven", and can't wait to watch this movie.

This could be a movie I might buy, if it appeared at local dvd shops. At least if the reviews were good enough.

well personally, I thought it started really strong, then went downhill around ep 15 (not sure its that ep... when the fat guy died...). in the end, it came out as OK. have you seen Berserk or Samurai Champloo? these are two "medieval" animes that I feel are superior to Basilisk.

I've seen berserk and it's really good, but I personally prefer Basilisk.. Episode 22 and 23, the fight between Tenzen and Gennosuke is so stylish and well animated, no fancy jutsus only raw fighting...

Truly my favorite animee!

Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou + FILM : Shinobi

I don't know what the original book was like, and which one is closer to it: the anime or the live action movie, but personally I have to say the movie can't be even compared to the anime. All they had in common were names and the reason why the fight was originally initiated. But that's where it ends. This movie was just a bunch of random fights between random people.

It was perhaps a very good idea to decrease the number of participating ninjas on both sides to half considering the lenght limitations imposed by the movie format, but unfortunately that was the only good choice they made. Despite including less people, they still totally failed to create any personalities to the characters. And without unique personalities, they were just freaks with fancy powers fighting each others for who knows what reasons.

Well, I wanted to wacth this movie till the end, and so it wasn't all bad, but I wouldn't ever call it good either.

The movie was pretty much an orgy in bad acting and sheer hilarity.

If not for Tenzen's pure hotness I doubt I would have even watched it all. Doesn't even come close to the anime.
/ No, you warrant no villain's exposition from me.

Yes, the movie disappointed me. It was also cut short. They also included five ninjas from each side.

Man I was looking forward for those sex scenes. Damm.

The one thing which bothered me the most was the lack of depth in the characters. You're supposed to feel sad for the characters when they die, and the anime has achieved this. But for the movie, I was surprised Hotarubi and Saemon died so suddenly, when it could have built up more for it by giving us more screen time of Hotarubi (which I find is cutter than Oboro). I chuckled when Gennosuke died. This is one of those films which "could have been great".

I totally agree with you Psyke.

I mean why did Saemon changed into Koshiro and not use his disguise. What was that all about? And yes Hotarubi was cutter than Oboro. You have great taste.

This film could have been great. It should have been, considering all the hype. It had a decent storyline and throughout characters but they made a mess of it. I feel an urge to kill someone.

Well haven't seen the anime yet (though I'm probably going to do so very soon) but I have seen the movie (hence the post here ).

And as I wrote over in movie recommendations already, it was fucking awesome and I loved every part of it. Yashamaru was HOT!! And I found Tenzen extremely great too.

And Ayumi Hamasaki is, of course, the BEST.
Heaven just doesn't get old!

Edit: Looking through your posts I get the impression that you didn't like it very much... which is weird. I couldn't find any particularly bad things about it. Good twists, nice deaths, cool characters...

And the acting was bad? Well... I didn't notice anything of the sort. Strange.

Maybe it's because I don't have the anime to compare it with?

Yeah. It's hard to say, but most likely if I hadn't seen the anime earlier, I wouldn't have been so disappointed in the live action show. But the truth is that the difference between them is like that of a hay cart and a helicopter. Watch the anime, and you will see.

I'm not particularly predisposed to always think anime should be inherently good and live action bad. For example the Grave of the Fireflies live action movie was quite good indeed.

Media Player Classic with K-lite Codec Pack worked perfectly for me. But then again I haven't ever encountered an integrally sound video file that I couldn't have watched with MPC. A couple of times groups have made some errors and released videos in bizarre subformats that I haven't been able to watch, but that hardly counts.

Probably. I mean, the movie wasn't downright craptacular, it was just extremely disappointing in comparison to the divine creation which the anime is ( which you naturally must watch ). The characters were poorly fleshed out and I just didn't really care about them, not even Hotarubi whose anime counterpart actually made me cry. I did however like the movie Oboro much more than the Oboro we saw in the anime.

As for the bad acting, I just didn't like Joe Odagiri as Gennosuke at all. It didn't work out for me one bit. I also couldn't keep myself from laughing during Hyoma's death scene.

Kippei Shiina was fucking excellent as Tenzen, however. He alone was what made the movie worthwhile for me.
